Please help with 2 videocards express x1 and x16

Ok I'm going crazy here. I want to hook up three monitors to my computer. I have a ati raedon x850 video card installed with vga and dvi out. Dual monitor setup works fine. I bought another monitor and thought I hook it up using the onboard video card, which didn't work as I found out that my raedon disabled the onboard.

So I went out and bought another video card, due not having another pci express x16 slot I had to settle for a x1 video card. I bought this one

Well now when I turn on my computer the new video card disables my ati videocard. It gives me and error saying " update driver or enable ati adapter in display manager". I updated the drivers and in the catalyst display manager is nothing to enable the card.

I'm not sure what to do now?? I think my only choice is buying a video card with 3 or 4 vga outputs but that is just not worth it.

I know its a long thread but please help :)

I didn't think that could be done that way
Any addon Video card will automatically disable the onboard video
The PCI-e x1 Is meant for users who do not have PCI-e x16, just an alternative I thought.

I think you should download your Motherboard Manual and just confirm what is allowed to be enabled at the same time
By the way you forgot to post your Motherboard (or computer manufacture model and al windows version) But just go to the support page and download your manual and read it

I think it's because your motherboard may not support two video cards;unless, it supports Sli/Crossfire. Link your motherboard plz.:)

I ran the "cpu-z" application and it gives me the following
Manufacturer: pegatron corp.
Model: Violet
Chipset: Nvdia nforce 720a
Southbridge: Nvdia ID075c
Lpcio: Fintek F8000

Bios:

Brand: American Megatrends INC.
Version: 5.16
Date: 07/01/2009

Hope that helps

Im not to farmiliar with the whole 3 monitor set up, but i can tell you that it won't work with 2 seprate video card set ups ati and nvidia together..nono

only n & n and ati & ati

It might be the whole sli config. im not sure tho, havent tried it before.

Is this a manufacture computer like Dell or HP or Asus or something like that?
If so, please provide the Manufacture Name and Model number

the computer is a hp p6130y

You can find all your HP info and drivers and manual, by clicking >> HERE
Note: you can even chat directly to them, and specifically ask about the two PCI-E ports

Also, whenever anyone asks for your system specs again, the first thing you should quote is the manufacture make and model number ;) (not CPU-z)

firstly your motherboard doesnt support sli or crossfire. Also to run 2 cards in sli or crossfire you need 2 exact same cards eg. 2 identical 8800gt. Next thing is not all video cards support sli or crossfire at all. Your x850 id say would not have a crossfire bridge.

You guys realize there's a difference between SLI/Crossfire and simply having two video cards in a computer. I've run plenty of pre-SLI/Crossfire computers with multiple video cards.

I'm wondering if you're simply running into a software issue. I read around a bit and found some other people are apparently having similar problems in Vista but not Windows 7... I know I have also run into some older computers (98 era machines) who's drivers conflicted.

I'm not really sure what more to say... I wish you were local so I could simply test out the cards and see how they play in say Windows 7 verses whatever you're using (windows Vista I assume?)

When I have both cards in the computer and I boot it up, it gives me an error "Incompatible vga adapter has been disabled" than the catalyst control center gives me a warning saying that I don't have the drivers to run the card, even though I have the newest drivers for both cards.

I called nvdia and ati and they are saying the same thing, you have to find cards that both run on the same drivers. So I guess i'm picking up another geforce 8400 but one that has a pci x16 slot and putting my raedon inside my other pc.

Lets see if that helps :)

In vista you can not use both Nvidia drivers and Ati drivers at the same time. Windows 7 although does support multiple vendor configurations.

I think you got it there... It didn't strike me at first that the cards were different brands :o But yeah, still probably essentially a software problem. Perhaps see about upgrading to Windows 7 when it's available and you should be in the clear.

yep!!! windows 7 fixed everything, both cards are running at normal speed and finally have my three monitor setup :).
When I was running vista, the nvdia card was running very loud and getting hot but as soon as I installed windows 7 and booted up it slowed down and runs much quieter :)

I just noticed you have a hybrid enabled chipset and you bought an ATI card as your x16 and an nVidia as your x1. Ok, go return both cards and get any nVidia card 6 series or above that you can afford. Slap it in your x16 slot, install the newest nVidia drivers for your chipset and your video card and you will be able to enable hybrid SLI that allow you to use both GPUs simultaneously. The you can use all 3 monitor ports (One onboard and two on the PCIe X16 card). Problem solved. If you don't like that then get an EVGA monitor extender. It allows you to connect multiple monitor to a single video display. That's if you still wanna use it in vista. But I guess M$ finally got it right in Win 7. Finally.

you DO NOT need to have 2 identical cards just needs to be same chipset.

you could with out problems run hd5870 with 4870 in xfire just hte 5870 will down-clock to the 4870 speeds. same goes for nvidia cards
