Hi everyone, we all know the nice chime the computer makes when we plug a flash drive or some kind of USB device into the computer. the "chime" it makes when its plugged in and taken out, my computer recently started making the chime (in) and chime (out) noise randomly all the time, about every 5 seconds. i've gone through task manager and made sure nothing was there that wasn't suppose to be, i've checked all my USB ports, i tried doing a system restore but it wont do it, the only change i've made in the past two weeks was service pack 3 update...i've also went as far as to disable the USB ports and it still does it. can anyone help me to get this nice little chime to shut up??? you wouldn't believe how annoying it gets when listening to music or doing anything. thanks
luke.

Shut the computer down and restart it?
Smack it?
Unplug? (Not good for it)
Plug a USB device in?
Turn your speakers off?
Scream at it, tell it who's boss?
Unplug speakers and plug them back in?

don't think they are going to work.

Try different USB ports.
Try it in another computer.
Is it just the device???

It can happen. I don't know about vista, but on xp it does. When i turn off the printer, it plays the chime out sound late. If you plug in/out many devices many times this is what can happen.

If it annoys you, you can deactivate this notification sound. Should i say how?

I'm not exactly sure how this went in Vista but in XP, go to Control Panel -> Sound and Audio devices and then go to the Sounds tab - then, find the Program Event list find Device Connect & Device Disconnect, and from the sounds list choose (None). The procedure can't be very different for Vista. This WILL get rid of the sounds, but doesn't fix the problem itself, if nothing appears to be malfunctioning, good, but if someting doesn't work right, this is only a temporary solution.

Every time it makes the sound, does it come up with the "New Device Found" message (a balloon should appear in the taskbar, you know the one I mean, rightio)?

thanks so much, hopefully this does it, its happening randomly, theres no device found balloon coming up, its just freaking annoying, all ports are working fine to...i turned it off and (knock on wood) its not making noise right now, again, thanks!!!

hackapelite the new device balloon pops up only the first time you connect the device to install the driver it needs. If you connect it the second time, it will just play the chime sound to notify you that the device was found.
