Hi, it's been awhile since I've posted on this forum but I've just encountered some crazy problem lol. I updated my sig for my current rig and need some help. I recently bought a 9800GX2 obviously used but works and powers on, I first replaced my 550 Cooler Max PSU with some 650 LSP ultra PSU, and the computer didn't power but rather the psu gave me humming sounds and right after I began to smell something burning. I turned the computer off asap, I figured the 9800 was drawing too much power from the 650 so I just returned it and picked up a 750. As far as I know the 9800 only requires 580 watts and 40 amps, The box states 46 amps and 750 combined load or whatever. So NOW When I power the computer it'll boot and power but it won't POST or give me and beeps. What should I do? Thanks for reading.

Sorry to say but it sounds like you may have damaged the motherboard. Try resetting the cmos first though and see if that helps.

I've reset it twice, via jumper pins. So I'm thinking of pulling the battery tonight and try it again tomorrow. Theres a status light on my mobo I guess I don't know but its a green LED at the bottom and that comes on, is that any thing important?

The green light on the motherboard just shows that its getting power. To reset the cmos, do this.

Unplug power from the power supply, remove the cmos battery, press the power button on the front of the case a few times to dishcharge any remaining power. Then wait a minute and reinsert battery and reconnect power to PSU and try booting up.

Usually when a psu sparks or burns like that, there is a good possibility that it took more hardware out with it. You might have to remove and reseat the memory and all pci cards.

Ah I just tried that but still no go :(. I know it sounds stupid, but could it be the powersupply? From what I read the GX2 is a porker so Could it just be that there is not enough energy to power everything on but not have enough energy to boot? I don't really know. I guess the only way to test my hardware would be to remove it all and try it in another rig.

The new power supply should power your rig no problems. Like I said, most likely you have hardware damage now.

I just confirmed the board works and the cpu are good. I did a bench of just the mobo cpu and one stick of ram on my old PSU and it booted up. So what Am I left with? Whats causing the system to go retarded?

Ah I continued to look around, and It seems that this powersupply has no wire for the -5 (the white wire) could this be the problem? Also I ran the GX2 solo on the 750w and the mobo off the 550w and I got the same problem. SO what the heck.... Is this a psu issue or a GPU issue.....Please any help would be awesome

Running off of 2 different psu's isn't gonna help you. If neither psu works with the board then it sounds like its not a psu issue. Not sure what to tell you to do besides do more diagnosing.
