im not sure if this is exacly a motherboard problem but when i start up the comp sometimes is says that hardare monitor found a problem, when i check it is says that the 5v+ circuit is only at about 4.5v. all yesterday my comp wouldnt work properly. it would freeze up at the windows loading screen or at best at the logon screen.

also i think my cpu is overheating, what should the temp be at? its an AMD 900mhz if it matters
 
I don't think that should get too hot, but I believe a 900mhz Tbird can goto ~70deg C before it dies. Your biggest problem is your PSU 4.5V on the 5V is not good

ATX spec calls for 5% tolerance on the 5v rail which means it cant drop below 4.75v so you've definitely got stability issues there

but i believe a 900mhz Thunderbird can goto ~70deg c before it dies

socketa = 90c
slota = 70c

is that why its crashing all the time??

Given that the voltages are way out of spec (so the motherboard cant compensate) i would bet thats why yer getting instability. Easiest solution would be to get a new PSU... there are some suggestions in PSU 101.
 
like i stated in the my other post, someone had advised me to try a little trick where u pull out the battery, switch over 2 lil thingies, wait a few mins and the motherboard is supposed to be 'reset' then put everything back... well i did it and now the comp works :confused:


please tell me if this makes any sense.
i dont got much cash and this comp is plenty for what i need so i really dont want to spend any money if i can jus fix it

Well what you did is reset the BIOS when you pulled the battery, but are you saying that that fixed it or that it's still broken?
 
well its been done before and it works for about a week or two then starts crashing again.... reset it and it works again (for a bit)


is this still a PSU problem? or a problem with that 5v circuit?

edit: also i got an older comp. can i jus throw the PSU outta that one into this one??

im not much of a computer guy but i am a mechanic so i really like to take stuff apart figure out how it works n fix it myself
 
oh i totally forgot when the comp loads up just before windows starts up it says something like ultrabios not detected or something like that.... but it says this all the time whether it works or not
 
before i try it can u tell me that resetting the bios somehow "temporarly" fixes the 5v circuit, which is what's causing the instability
 
Your power problem can be a cause for concern. If a device, Eg: the motherboard and hard-disk, requires 5V+ to work properly and doesn't get it, the system becomes unstable. Check the VOLTAGE requirements of your memory modules, and graphics card. Also, if you have an AGP graphics card inserted, make sure there is nothing in the
first PCI- SLOT, as they both use the same IRQ.

Both the ROM-BIOS and CMOS settings in a computer can get corrupted, for any number of reasons. To cure your lost ULTRA-BIOS try re-flashing the ROM.
 
how do i reflash the rom?

and how does resetting my bios somehow fix this 5v problem? and why does it only last for a couple weeks
