Okay I have a computer I want to take to college but about 3 months ago the fan stopped working. It wouldnt start up and the computer would overheat and shut off on its own...well I left it alone for about 3 weeks or so and it just started up and the fan was working again.....

Now im back to the same thing. Is it the hardware or are there any viruses that can cause this? I dont know a lot about computers but I'm not completely stupid when it comes to them either. Anyone know the problem? Why did it start working again and now its screwy like it was months ago?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you need to get a can of compressed air to blow the dust and dirt of it as well as the rest of the fans and the case itself. You can pick up an air cleaner at most retail stores that have pc accessories. Thet usually run for about $2-3 on average. It the fan continues to bind up find a suitable replacement usually under $5-.

It certainly isn't a virus, I've never known a virus that had the ability to affect the power reaching a fan. Assuming the fan's power cord is firmly rooted in the motherboard, it just sounds like a dodgy fan to me. The turn off will be a safety feature (although I think you know that). Assuming we're talking about the CPU heatsink fan, it may be worth swapping it over, just to see if it makes a difference. The only two things it could be is a faulty fan or a faulty motherboard, all being well it's just the first one.

And certainly dust and debris are common as well as a loose pin in a plug itself. Check the plug to see if it is down like it should be and try an air cleaner to see if the fan runs strong afterwards. Too often everyone jumps at the notion of adware/spyware when basic maintainence can often prevent damages seen to hardwares. Gee I just had to grab a couple of blue led fans to brighten the day.

Also to check that its not the socket playing up try putting the fan plug in another fan socket, something like the system fans.:)

A bad connector on the board usually means a bad board if you don't have an extra plugin point. Remember that the cpu fan has a specified plugin point for various reasons like overheat protection circuits and hardware monitoring as well as speed control by the board itself. That is one of the most vital unless you use an optional fan speed controller on a custom fan setup.
