Hi All,

New to the forum so hope im posting in the right place lol. Anyway the story goes.....My motherboard pretty much broke down,I took it to a computer shop where I was advised to have new motherboard and processor. Them being the experts,i agreed, they told me it would run so much faster than before (it was pretty slow lol) Anyway I get the pc back and they tell me they had to also reinstall windows over the old one!! No problems i thought, but since I have had the pc back its even WORSE than before, it takes approx 4 mins to start up,ie takes approx 3 mins to open, folders, files, photos etc take forever to open, and as for a download....forget it lol. I spoke to the shop, who after quite happily taking my money simply said "that shouldnt be happening" drop it in and we will tweak her a bit!! I just dont have the time/patience to drop her off, so im hoping someone here can help?????? I used to have a dual processor,32 bit vista, now in computer prioperties it states "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processor 3500+ 2.20 GHz" as the processor "447MB"n as memory. Can anyone help please? Is there a conflict or something going on, im at my wits end :-( Hope someone can!! Thanks

Sounds like they didn't upgrade your ram. Vista needs at least 1GB to run, 2GB if you really want to be productive. I have a acer laptop with vista, and it could use another GB of ram.

Yes, an increase in RAM will definitely help. Also, make sure you are running SP1, with all of the updates.

so you used to have a dual core processor then you took it to the shop and they sold you a new motherboard and a single core processor?

can i ask what was the processor you had before? amd-intel? what model? is there any dual core processors out there that are slower than an amd 3500+????

i personaly wouldnt run vista with any less than 2gig of ram but you can run it on 1gig!!!

Hi, well for some reason today PC seems to be fine, I restored it last night to when before i put on "VISTA CLEANER" which i was told would help with registrys etc. Maybe it was to do with that??? So Im thinking now of increasing the memory to 1.5MB ish. What ram do I buy?? Any help please would be appreciated. Thanks

Well I'd say that you already have a 512MB stick of RAM in a DIMM slot. Just open your computer case and write down all of the information that is printed on the label on that DIMM. Then go online to match that information, order it, and you're all set. Most likely you can go to Kingston's website and order the RAM. Just make sure that you have at least 1GB total in your system. Good luck.

if you are really unsure about the RAM then try the online scanner at www.crucial.com It will show you compatible RAM. Dont buy off them though! you will find it cheaper elsewhere but at least they will tell you what exact type to get

One of your RAM sticks may have fallen out. Vista needs 1gb minimum (2gb is better) to run.

In fact, vista shouldnt have installed at all. Retail versions wont install if ram is < 512mb.

Basic and Home Premium will only use one of the two+ cores of your processor so
dual core won't matter. I guess it's another marketing scheme to get you to spend an extra $100 to get partial usage of your computer.

Yes, I even think Home Basic should have at least 2 GB. I've never used Basic, only Home Premium and Ultimate (which ran kind of sluggish on a 4GB machine when I used it - and it had a dual core Intel at about 2.9 GHz per core - what more does Visa want???)

You know, after all, Fedora Core is just a click away - if you can get on the internet.:)
What's funny is that its installer is called anaconda - it seizes your Windows installation and eats it. hahahaha:) Or you can try Ubuntu. Right now, I am using openSUSE 11. I LOVE IT!

thats a lie. It wont use more than 1 physical CPU but it can use more than 1 logical CPU (e.g a core2 or a P4 with hyperthreading turned on)

Try it yourself, XP and vista home will happily use both cores of my pentium D, but wont use more than one of my dual xeons in my other box.

Fedora is buggy as hell and slow as vista
