PLZ HELP....Buying a new PC

OK, so which route should I take, the Intel or AMD? To give you an idea of a typical day at my computer, I normally listen to music while I'm downloading music while I'm browsing the internet. Other days I edit photos and such. Does that sound like I should go with the Intel? And planning and buying my parts might sound easy to you, but I'm going to have a lot of difficulty pinpointing which exact hard drive to get, or which exact RAM, so basically, I need all the help I can get. Thanks again!

OK, I read the CPU 101, and even though it was a lot of jargon to me, I think I have decided on the Intel route. In the previous post, does the link "see here" have EVERYTHING I need???? I'm talking USB ports, sound, video, internet connection (which I use LAN by the way), etc etc???? Thanks!

i prefer amd procs... faster processor, slower frequency...
however intel does offer hyperthreading...
in your case id say go with a budget athlon 64 (3000+, 3200+, 3500+)
512mb of ram at least... get dual channel
7200rpm hard drive... anything less wont do
dvd burner, even if u dont know how to burn dvds (yet)

OK,
Obviously, I think I need someone to literally hand me (electronically of course) a list of exactly what I need. By the way, I already have a DVD/CD burner in my current computer that I can transfer over. So, someone please help me. You have all been so helpful thus far, and I am tasting my new computer as I type, but I just need someone to "hold my hand" through this process.

AMD doesn't make faster processors. Intels are up to 3.8Ghz AFAIK (I am probably wrong) and AMD was up to 2.2-2.6Ghz. Of course the speed of the processor means nothing if it preforms like garbage.

I know that I may come off as a little needy or too dependant, but that's just it, I AM dependant. I need someone to tell me what exactly to get. So, can someone give me a list of items to get, I will then order them, and once they arrive, if I have trouble putting it all together, I will post more. Please include everything in the list that I will need for my computer, including a 3.5 floppy drive, sound, video, USB ports, 1 GB RAM, at least 200 GB Hard Drive, and anything else you think I may need. I guess I am going with the Intel route, but if you really think I should go with the AMD route, let me know! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't just read this and move on to the next post. Again, thanks for the replies and keep them coming!

That statement is fundementally flawed. Speed is measured in Hz. Hz is the the unit for frequency.

however intel does offer hyperthreading...
Which just means there is just an extra fetch and decode block and a cache segmentation unit...

Considering stock boxes, you're right :)

and AMD was up to 2.2-2.6Ghz
FX57 is 2.8GHz

Ok at least yer honest :P

A fairly complete list has already been made here :)

Praetor,
Is that list ENTIRELY comeplete? AKA, does it have all of the following:

Processor (check)
Motherboard (check)
RAM (check)
Hard drive (check)
CD-ROM (check, but I already have one, so i don't need one, right?)
Case (check)
OS (check)
Monitor (check)
USB ports (does that come ON the motherboard?)
Video???
Sound???
3.5 floppy drive???

So, if there's anything that was NOT on the list please add it. Also, if you think I would be better off with another item to replace something on that list, please let me know. As soon as I have all this information, I will order all at once. Thank you!

1. USB comes standartd
2. Video is there
3. Sound is there
4. Floppy isnt there and if u really need it ... then you can buy it. You'll rarely see me or mgoldb2 spec a floppy drive
5. You'll want keyboard, mouse and all that crap but again, mgoldb2 and myself damn near never spec those

For the stuff we dont spec, if you really want/need, goto www.newegg.com and do a search :)

Sounds good to me. Were those items listed some of the better deals? Also, I have about $100 in Best Buy gift cards. What item, if any, should I buy there instead of online (AKA, what item would be about the same cost online as it would in store).

1. I dont deal with Best buy, dunno bout mgoldb2 but i dont think he do either
2. Doubtfull you'll be able to save all that much money from buying via bestbuy, my guess is to put the gift certs. towards keyboard/mouse/extra crap :)

Obviously I cant answer that question and naturally the answer will be "no, you can always find a better price" ... the list above is available so that you have a fallback position to compare prices to.... it's up to you to find the best prices you can :)
