Plz help with slow computer/internet...

I registered here to get some help with my PC that is having slower than normal speed/performance.

Let me start off by saying I know nothing about computers and that I mostly use mine for internet.

I think my problem started yesterday when I used an e-how article to change my IP address. The reason I did this was to gain access to my favorite website/forum that I was banned from. After that I was still unable to access that particular website.

Here is the link for the process I used:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4919773_change-ip-address.html

After doing that, I had a somewhat different IP. However evreything started to run a lot slower.
I have tried CCleaner, Norton Anti-virus and I have just downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and am running a full scan of all drives at the moment. So far no luck with the issue.

This is very frustrating as I have never had this problem on this PC before and have had it for 2 years but it is older than that.
Websites are taking what seems like forever to load, at least compared to what they used to.
There is a lot of delay with the mouse "catching" and "clicking" items as well, and there is delay when typing as well, for example when I am typing this post.
Like I said I know nothing about computers so I have no idea what the problem could be or what to do about it.

Another example of the problem is that youtube videos don't play very well and they do not run continuously through the whole video if that makes sense.

So please, I really need help guys and I would greatly appreciate any advice that will fix this frustrating problem.

Can you explain anything recent you did to your computer that might have caused performance issues? You cleaned out out all the small stuff using CCleaner and have scanned for viruses. Are other programs on your computer affected (open slower, media player is slow,etc)? How much free space do you have on your hard-drive? How old is the computer? Theres a lot of different ways for a computer to be slowed down.

ROFLcopter -
The only thing I did was I changed my IP address using the method I linked to in original post. After that, everything pretty much slowed down. I just tried to open some other programs and they are slow to open/fully load as well.

Btw, is hard-drive the same as local disk (C:)?
If so it says:
Capacity = 74.5 GB
Used = 10.2 GB
Free = 64.2 GB

As far as how old the PC is, I am not sure unless there is a way to check. I got it as a gift a couple years ago and it was lightning quick when I first got it.
Windows 2000 Pro is installed if that is any indication of age.

Thanks.

Why don't you use system restore to put your computer back to the way it was before you started screwing with your settings. You can't physically change your ip address, only your internet provider can do that. You can change your internal IP address but not your external IP address, which is what everybody sees.

You can change what IP is displayed externally
There are hundreds of these programs around, but pretty sure that this type of advice is against forum rules (for you trying to access your banned sites)

Just go back to Network settings and change your settings back to "obtain an IP address automatically" then run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew
All done, by the way some ISPs want you to put a DNS setting in there as well, so you may want to check your Internet provider for that

And also I can't see how putting an unknown IP in there would have worked in the first place, unless you just luckily picked an IP in the range of your modem settings
Your Modem through DHCP will automatically allocate an IP for you, placing static IPs in the TCP/IP settings is only good when you have a network (or when the ISP and connection stipulates to use one).

ie It was a dumb e-how article

Thanks johnb35 and kimsland for your advice regarding IP address.
I don't have a problem if I can't access that website anymore.

My main concern right now is the computer/internet performance issue.

Do you have any advice as far that issue is concerned?

I am also having trouble with youtube videos as stated in the original post.

It sounds like that website set you up to run through a proxy. It's probably not very good and is causing your internet to slow down.

kimsland - What is exactly does this process fix and how do I do it? For example the one listed 'netsh winsock reset catalog' Do I just type it in exactly as you posted it?

Backwoods166 - What does that mean and what can I do about it?

Thanks for taking the time guys, it is appreciated.

yes copy and paste into a Command Window
Or write it in manually
It will just reset your network settings, I do it all the time

I think if you may have a RAM/HD issue. If both the internet and programs are running slow then there is something wrong with the hardware. If you can, try to replace the RAM/HD on at a time.
