have a hp compaq nw9440 laptop, justr bought it from a company, reformatted harddrive, which was working at the time, when done, trying to install windows xp pro back on, and it says cannot see hard drive, or no hard drive connected to this computer, what am i doing wrong? what can i do to correct this problem, anyone know?

If Windows isn't detected it, chances are it requires a S-ATA driver to be installed prior to installation.
When you boot up the computer with the XP CD in the drive, and you press any key to start the installation you will see a message about pressing F6 for drivers, etc.
You are support to hit this key and insert the diskette which came with the computer to install the hard drive driver for XP.
That could be the possibility as to why XP isn't seeing the drive.
Check with HP to confirm that's the case. But in most cases, that's usually what it requires.
Let us know what the outcome is, it possible it could be something else... anything at this point. Call HP to make certain.

ok, heres the problem, when i got the computer, it had no disks or anything, everything lost when fire happened, anyhow, if i were to buy windows xp that had service pak 2 on it, or lets say windows vista which might already have the drivers on them( which i heard i do not want to do,), would this solve my problem, or, is there a place where i could download these drivers and burn them on a cd and install these drivers then install windows?

like you said, i needed the driver for the sata hard drive, but i needed to buy a floppy to have it install, i was trying to burn it on a cd, but that did not work, after repeated attempts, finally got the usb floppy and a new version of windows(windows vista home premium) i am now typing this message on the puter i had problems with, thanks for your help.
