Plzzzz Help!!

I'm having problems trying to start up my new custom built comp. I put everything together, had some problems getting the fans to start going and some power, but once that was over with i got a new problem... When i turn on the comp nothing shows up on the monitor.. yes, the monitor is plugged into the video card... and the monitor isnt the problem. Did i damage my motherboard? My one friend said that the hard drives werent being read. I'm using my old 40 gb with windows xp to boot it up :confused: Is that a bad idea? Well if you can really help ,or it's simple enough to reply to this post, AIM if you can help me step-by-step

can you post the specs of your computer and any beeps the computer makes when you power it on?
 
Mobo: Asus K8V-X
Rosewill Case W/ 400 w PSU
CPU:AMD Athalon 64 3400+ clawhammer core 1 mb l2 cache
Video Card:Radeon 9600 xt 256 mb
Hard Drives: Wester digital 40gb (IDE) and 80gb (SATA)
Memory: PC 3200 Corsair 1 gb (2x 512mb)

the 2 main cords for power from psu are plugged in...i dunno exact name but one that is big and the smaller one with 4 pins
 
Everything turns on in the cpu.. hard drives turn on, everything is on... it's just the monitor is just black, i've never actually started up this comp before, it's brand new
 
dont hear any beeps..
My friend thinks i damaged it cuz he said your not supposed to touch the mobo first when putting it in or something like that.. you have to get out the static, cuz the motherboard can get damaged easily from static
 
Usually no beeps is a PSU failure or some motherboard component is tripping out. Make sure your CMOS jumper isn't set on clear.
 
damn, it's on normal :( lol, i was hoping that it would be on clear so that would fix my problem and you could of been my hero ! :D, but nope.. :P but do you have any other suggestions or do you think i'm gonna have to get a replacement mobo..?
)( That'd be pretty gay, i've been waiting for this for so long.. and now it's taking forever just to get started :( ... )(

I doubt it. I would also say that it is a PSU problem, but you said that the hdds went on? If you have a voltometer, measure the electricity coming out of the "big plug and the little 4-pin one" and see what it says. Somehow, I doubt that you have a voltometer, though. If you just "happen" to have another PSU, try it.

BTW, it wouldn't be a hdd problem, if it was, the computer would get partway through the POST, and then say something like "no hard disk detected" or something like that

Its supposed to be on normal -- so you can set it to clear -- and do read the manual on steps to reset the BIOS :)
 
Everything is turning on but nothing is showing up on the monitor.. my other psu is a 250 max so i dont think it could start it up. :/


No Voltometer :/


What will happen if i switch "the red switch" on teh back of the psu to 230 v instead of 115v for when i turn it on? would it hurt to try it?

If you live in 115 land then you wont be happy :D
 
it wont turn on, 230v is the setting for 'across the pond.' North American power outlets run ~120V so setting it to 230v will make it not turn on.

Try clearing the CMOS
 
Thx i got the monitor to turn on now it's checking my hardware, but it's not on clear cuz when it was on clear it wouldnt turn on so i switched it back to normal and then it worked.

No, it will turn on... just once on things start getting fried
 
no it will not turn on unless you have it plugged into a screwed up outlet. I have had PSUs on 230v and forgot to check, the computer doesn't turn on. What will fry stuff however is a 230v outlet + PSU on 115v
 
Well maybe my memory is bad (this happened a few years back) but I worked on my brother's computer - he had been stationed in S Korea and his friend built him a computer but the PSU was set to 230V by default but the army base used 115V so the computer got messed up. I ended up taking a chance and replacing the mobo and got it working.
