PNY 9800GTX+ very hot

Hey guys, I have a problem...

Im running a 9800GTX+ (PNY) in my system, when I play games it will regularly get up to 70 -80c. I don't know whats the safe temperature for these cards, but that seems a bit hot.

Recently after about 1hr of playing a game it will sometimes reach 80-90c and my system will crash.

It is not overclocked, I have removed as much dust as I can from it, the fan is set at 100%.

I don't want to have to buy an aftermarket cooler for it, cant really afford it at the moment. Is there anything else I can do to cool it down? (there is currently 1 case fan also pointed at the card)

That is odd... have you tried reseating the cooler with arctic silver ceramique? Sometimes u get that one in a thousand chance card with not enough/too much thermal paste factory applied.

Yeah, I don't really want to void the warranty on it. I haven't tried it with the case open yet... ill try that tonight... though I have done that in the past and it only ever seems to make 1 -2c difference...
 
This card blows the hot air out of the back of the case, right? do you have enough clearance at the backside to minimize the resistance the hot air gets?

as for the open case comment, its what I usually do to see if the card isnt getting enough (cool) air. if you have a desk fan (dont know what its called in english, sorry) try pointing one of those at it. jsut to get some cool air to flow though the heatsink.

if the card runs within acceptable temperatures then, you know there isnt enough cool air getting to the card. if it still runs hot, the only option is that the heatsink isnt propperly attached to the card (like bomberboysk said, too much or too little thermal paste for example.) in that case, I'd return to the shop with it. since removing the heatsink will void the warranty. (at least, over here it does.)

Erm... im not sure where it blows the air TBH... lol... the card looks like this. I can't check it either atm, im in the library xD lol

Yeah, i'd call it a desk fan lol... but I don't have one here at uni...its at home =/. Ill try the open case anyways...

I have had this card since xmas, this is the first trouble I am having with it... I don't know if I will be able to return it...Ill have a look into it though. Ill try getting as much dust out etc... and take the side off my case, if push comes to shove and I can't return the card for any reason, Ill take the heatsink off and try the thermal paste, then maybe consider an aftermarket cooler.

Yea, that card blows the air out of the back.

what you should check for sure is dust in the hearsink, jsut past the Fan. way, way back, my old 6800GT (and 7800GTX for that matter) had a simmilair cooler like that, only flatter. (1 pci slot thick) the problem with those was (at least for me) after a while, hair and dust would clog up the entrance of the heatsink. (so, inside the plastic cover, just past the fan. if you look into the opening, you should be able to see it.)

get a vacuum cleaner and probably a small brush. use the brush to loosen up the dust and hair, and then use the vacuum cleaner to get it out. (hold the fan still tough, else it'll speed up really, really fast. )
if that doesnt work, you'll have to take off the plastic cover of the heatsink to clean it propperly. (my guess would be its only a few screws.)
only remove the plastic tough, that shouldnt void the warranty I think. (make sure to check for one of those "void if seal is broken" stickers tough.
 
ty again lol... Im always a tad scared to use a vacuum cleaner near my pc, im scared that its gonna damage something lol...

Ill have a look and see if I can get the plastic cover off... (I thought it was in some way attached to the heatsink so it would void the warranty to remove it)

if you have one of those nozzles for the vacuum cleaner that makes the tip smaller, use that. it increases the speed of the air beeing sucked in quite a bit, gets the dust out more easy. :)
 
Ok, I have hoovered out my whole PC and taken the side off... and either I have screwed my temperature gauges or it has done something really good

my CPU is now 21 - 27c Idle (appose to 3Xc idle) and my grpahics card is idling at 35c as apposed to about 40 50c :s lol

now just gonna test ingame.



*EDIT* been playing for a few mins and hasnt gone above 50c! :O

If you have a desk fan make sure its not a metal one because i did this one time and my fan fell over from my cat and hit my power supply and surged the system!! :( !!!


Thankfully only the Power Supply had to be replaced

I'd stay away from using a Hoover on your PC, it'll build up a static charge. If that hits anything, you can kiss it good bye. You're better off using a can of compressed air, they're only cheap and they work really well.

The 9800 is the same as my 8800, hold the fan still on it and blow all the dust off. Then, try and blow all the dust out back, there may be some bigger bits you'll need to remove yourself. Not too much trouble though.

Yeah I was a bit sceptical about it, I did have a can of air, but it ran out :( lol. and where I bought it from its like £7 and I cant afford that atm (broke lol).

Though I did manage to scare the Crap outta myself....I forgot to plug the power cable back into the graphics card, booted my pc and nothing came on the screen, I panicked like hell until i realised what I had done lol
