Pocket Pc Recommendation?

Well, soon i'll be off to college, and i'll need something to type on in class (slow writer, fast typer)...

Basically I am looking for some kind of small device (laptop would be too big) where I could hook up a keyboard and just type away. It would also be helpful if it could sync to msword or some other pc app. Would the keyboard be able to draw power from the pocket pc or is this not possible without a wall outlet for power? Budget is sub 450$. Thanks, very much for your help.

I appreciate it,

I've used a PocketPC for a few years in Community College. I recently sold mine and sent to a small laptop, I reccomend you doing the same...

It can be very hard to type on a PDA(with a keyboard) The screen is very small and it's espcially hard to do lists. Also, I don't know if all are like this, but sometimes mine would just start acting like I was holding down some key. No keys would be actually stuck, but it would just repeate the last key I pressed, backspace included!

There are 2 main types of keyboards for these, wired and wireless. Wired draws power from the unit, wireless, obiviously, requires batteries. I would reccomend getting a wired one from the place you purchase it as you know it'll be the most compatable. And FYI, most wired keyboards have a port so you can charge the unit though the keyboard...

If you must have one, I'd say go for one with the XScale processor, at least 400MHz. 64M RAM would be best, 32M would be pushing it... Be sure and get some sort of memory card, too. The RAM is uses is just like a computer. If it is to loose power, you loose your data!

I would reccomend Dell. They have a wide selection and widely customizable.

Personally I like the x30 better than the x50. You can get an x30 anywhere from $189-$297 (they have a sale running right now) or you could go with the x50 for $254-$399. Since you are wanting to stay within $450, I would reccomend the high-end x30. I have that one and I have never had problems with it. It has Integrated 802.11b and Bluetooth wireless which I use alot. I think they make a Bluetooth keyboard that you could get.

Here, you can see all of the Axims here- http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/pda?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Hope this helps.

I owned a Dell Axim X5 i believe....hated it, sold it to my mom lol. Only brand i can personally truly recommend is the iPaq. My dad has owned one for yearrs and its still in tip top shape. Hes thinking of getting a new one with bluetooth and wireless and all that.

If you're not dead set on a PDA though, i would also suggest getting a laptop. its far more expandable in what it can do, and i think just overall better.

What was wrong with the Axim? Mine was quite good while I had it. It was one of the slower ones(compared to other 400MHz Xscales) but it still would play videos and 3D games just fine :) Only reason I sold mine was because I wanted something I could type on easier...

yeah, mine is fine, although i have the 624mhz, it runs everything i need on it. i can be anywhere in my house and be on the internet with the same speeds, i like it.

i still reccomend it :-D

way overpriced for a 300MHz XScale
incredibly large, very fat and it was shield shaped
seemed to lag tremendously
buttons were wobbly, you had to really push to get it to respond

compared to others i tried AFTER i bougt it, i wished i would have waited and researched a bit more. i'm all about thin and SQUARE/rectangular. the axim was fat and oodly shaped, i hated it.

but overall yes it did play mp3's and movies just fine...that wasnt a problem.

ooo, that is sleek, and it has a 1.4MP digital camera, but it only has a 520mxz Xscale, you would think it would have 624 with that camera.

If you're dead set on a Pocket PC I'd recommend an Ipaq, but if I were you I might take another look at a laptop. There are several very small PC's (Fujitsu has one with an 8.9 inch screen) and Apple offers 12 inch models of both the iBook and the Powerbook. You would probably get more performance for cheaper and depending on what models you're looking a laptop might be about the same size as a Pocket PC, folding keyboard, and whatever other accessories you get.
