Point of no return?

If I switched from ata to raid in the bios, (and the laptop won't boot now) does that mean it's all over for this computer?

Yep, just switch it back and it will boot back up again.

Just so you know, anytime you change the way the sata controller works, you need to reinstall the operating system from scratch. Raid requires 2 or more drives to work. You just can't switch settings, its not that easy.

Unless it's a Mac:)

Any Unix based system can handle the switch, Windows can too but it takes registry hacks and sometimes some additional software. Windows XP takes a bit more work to do it than Vista or 7.

Out of curiousity, besides the obvious answer (to enable RAID) why would you switch the controller to RAID mode?

I will try that asap! Thanks so much for the feedback I'll post on how it goes. Thx agn.
As far as why I did it... A) I'm noob and I usually learn this way..b) I read a forum that said it was my solution. I don't think that guy knew what he was talkin about.

Okay I had switched back to ata but I still had issues. I selected to "reset configuration settings" now I'm back on track. I put in my windows 7 disk and it boots up I choose x86 version (that's what I have) and hit next. I accept the license and continue...it asks me where do I want to install windows... Well I'm assuming the hard drive is not being read since there is nothing displayed in the selection area. So I went online to look for drivers to help the computer see the drive all I found was an xp driver... So I tried it out, well this win promise sata worked! Now it can see the drive so I selected "disk 5 unallocated space" it begins to install... Things look great until it stop and gives me this message "windows cannot install required files. Make sure all the files required for installation are available, and restate the installation"

So that's where I'm stuck at. I think I need a windows 7 promise / IDE controller, but I cannot find one online. Please advise! Haha this issue looks like it will never end, I feel so close!
