Point of power options?

So in Windows you are able to click on the battery and you have power saver, balance and High Performance. What happens when you click on each one? I know I have my screen brightness set up for each one but what does it actually do to my hardware with the different options? Thanks for any info and I am asking just out of curiosity.

Some of them will turn off different pieces of hardware, or even suspend the PC to RAM, in order to save power.

I am not totally sure on this but your CPU might lower the multiplier to save energy.

Well I know it doubles by battery life but I was curious to what it does and that makes sense. Thanks guys.
