Poor Gaming Performance?

I bought a new laptop in September of 2010:

- intel i5 processor
- 4GB RAM
- Mobility Radeon HD5650 Graphics card.

when i got it i could run almost any of the games I had on max settings including Hitman Blood Money and The Sims 3.

Recently I tried to play the Sims 3 and got terrible performance as well as a graphics glitch in game that showed warped images and colors.

What is wrong with my computer? i really doubt it is viruses or to many files etc. as I have only had laptop for 4 months or so and it eems to run completely fine when not in any games.

- only things i can think of is my graphics card is disabled or not runing to full potential somehow? or maybe my RAM is screwed? I have been told that carrying around your laptop while it is on can screw up the RAM???
thanks

Run 3DMark06 just to see if scores are in line? Failed RAM I think would tend to screw in other ways also. Is this an MSI? Could some kind of power management be doing it?

i ran it and it gave me some results (in the 7000 range??) the bars were higher to the right side? ot metioned something about this is not a verified graphics driver tho

Doesn't sound like a ram issue, but ram is among the most unpredictable of the possible hardware failure in the system.

It sounds like a driver issue. Maybe windows has updated the driver recently? Try going into the device manager and rolling it back.

That 3DMark score is actually very good. How about you cut to the chase and tell us what notebook it is?

I have ideas but I want to know model.

HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC
Intel Core i5 CPU M 430 @2.27GHz
4.0 GB RAM (3.80 Usable)
64 bit Windows 7
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

I'm not going to jump to conclusions and say for sure that the problem is with the motherboard, but HP has been using lead-free solder for a few years now which detaches from the motherboard around the GPU. This occurs when the GPU gets hot from running games or having inadequate ventilation. If you don't find a quick solution to the problem (like a driver, etc) I would make sure to have the computer checked out officially. If it has anything to do with a bad GPU, Processor or motherboard...return it and get something else!

Again, not saying that this IS the problem, but I have seen it happen and it becomes an expensive mess. Good luck, and I hope you find a simple solution.

not too sure about the whole solder thing.

Do you run gamebooster or anything? CCleaner to clean up registry/unnecessary files?

all the games run like crap, i tried system restored and restored it back to when i bought the laptop and noticed that i get a brighter more vibrant display now. but games still dont run like when i first brought the laptop home??
really weird anyone know

UPDATE!!

I generated a system health report (One of the control panel performance tools in Windows 7)

everything checked out or had a green light beside it excpet for "Hardware Device and Driver checks" which failed. The description just said "Survey of Windows Management Infrastructure supported devices."

so anyone know? or know somewhere i can download the CORRECT driver for my video card (which is what im assuming is the issue)

- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
