Poor performance or just me? (cpu problem?)

I bought a cpu/mobo combo and it came in yesterday. I installed it all, formatted and reinstalled windows, and installed cs:s to find I get terrible fps (like 4fps) with recommended settins. So, I tried benchmarking and I got a score of 937 on 3dmark05.

Specs:

AMD Athlon 3500+
Gigabyte K8U-939
1GB PC3200 OCZ Premier Dual Channel (2x512)
ATI Radeon 9800NP (i'm gonna upgrade soon)

I've installed all of the latest drivers for everything, too.

try reseating the video card and check your cpu temps. If your cpu is too hot it will probably slow down and give you poor performance. If this is the case, you'll probably have to reseat the cpu, but make sure that's the problem before you do it.

I imagine you've already checked this, but does your video card require external power via a molex connection, and if so is it plugged in?

You should be hitting ~2000 points in 05' I believe. In your display properties, check your "SMARTGART" settings and make sure you are running at "AGP 8X". Also, this cna be set in your BIOS, make sure it's set to 8X in their too.

Amds dont slow down there speeds when too hot just to let u know. Yea check to make sure you are running 8x. Also make sure you plug your video card(im oretty sure 9800 have to be plugged in)

it won't slow down in turns of clockspeed. But it'll yield poor performance. Nothing operates well when they're overheated.
