Hey everyone,

I keep getting loads n loads of pop ups, I have a pop up blocker but I think these pop ups are from a Virus that I can't get rid of, its called surf side kick or something, there are heaps of other ones and my software that I download doesn't seem to know how to get rid of it (It's driving me nuts!!). Can you recommend the best software???

Thanks

The Giga man

First, if I remember right, Surf side kick is spyware/adware. Get Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE and scan your computer(remove everything they find).

If you're talking about those gray box popup ads that say "windows messenger service" up at the top, then you're not infected at all and can easily stop them. Start>control panel>administrative tools>services(if you have control panel set to classic view), look for the service that is titled "windows messenger." Right-click on it and hit stop, then right-click on it again and hit disable.

Even with some of the best popup blockers the ads still manage to slip through. The settings in the security section of Internet Explorer allow another blocker to flag ads and other popup windows by choosing the option there. You will see a small bar underneath the address and menu bars appear when you first reach a site or click on a link that is the newer security fix added to IE by Microsoft found in Service Pack 2. You simply right click on that to open or deny any new windows like ads.

Other tricks now used have a seemingly ad window float across the screen out of nowwhere that are embedded in the site itself where you have to click on the close button to get rid of it. This is something no blocker will have an effect on. The advice to get AdAware SE Personal at http://www.lavasoft.com is a good one there for cleaning ad generators off of your drive as well as data miners that track your browsing habits as well as spring ads out of nowhere sometimes without being seen at the site where it came from.

First, check 'add/remove programs' for any of the surfside kick entries and uninstall them.If none are there, do the following.

Open Windows Explorer and locate the following:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 2
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

One or all may exist.

Click Start and then Run

Type "C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\ssk.exe" /u where the folder name (SurfSideKick 3) corresponds to the folder name you found in the step above

Click OK

Enter the given security code (generated automatically by the uninstaller) click OK
Click on YES at the reboot prompt.

Reboot and you should be clean

At the bottom of the post is the link.
DustBuster is a garbage file removing utility for Microsoft Windows operating systems. It searches for junk files and temp files that are of no use and are just taking space on your hard drive. Based on a "fuzzy logic" scanning technology, DustBuster cleans over 1500 different types of useless temp files and directories in a single click, detecting and deleting all these unneeded files automatically. This will increase hard disk space on Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. The integrated SensibleScan search engine does not interfere with system files or installed applications: it gives you the freedom to clean up disk space simply and securely in no time, enhancing your system's performance, so you can focus on what's really important to you.

DustBuster analyzes in full automatic mode the content of your hard drive and finds and deletes a wide range of files while safeguarding the integrity of the operating system and the installed applications. No configuration is required as DustBuster is developed for reducing the interaction with the user.

DustBuster should not be installed on critical systems: authors accept no responsibility for damages caused as results of use of this software. The SensibleScan technology is under development and must be considered experimental. We strongly recommend to perform a complete backup of the hard drive if you are trying automatic cleaning for the first time.

You can get Spyware Blaster along with several other spy blasters at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html But it is actually far from a "must have" when compared overall to a long list of other programs. That was recently removed here for actually being less effective then others tried. The one thing in it's favor is being less intrusive then some others.

Hello PC Eye, well being that I know nothing about these other programs (no links to the board posts or names provided) it is a must have on my machine. Like SpySweeper being a real pop up pain about every small detail. Not Intrusive is very important to me.
I came here looking to continue to learn. I try to share what little I know and HOPE to gain from it by communication and others sharing with me.
I get the impression your board has enough going on that I won't make a dent. SO what about dustbuster (it is at Major Geeks) But I do prefer going to the home site when ever possible. U ever use it. Would it be to much to ask for a link into the location of the discussion on the good vs bad spyware tools?

One of the best freeware antivirus utility seems to one of the best for flagging trojans web sites put on your system. AVG 7.1 Free edition proved it again when the trojan Generic: SUS was put right at the root directory of the hard drive. AVG still flagged this one even though it was totally removed from the msconfig startup group and services to make it inactive. As soon as AVG flagged it the reset button was pressed right as a new window was trying to open. Someone's plan didn't work out. You can grab the free edition of AVG at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Grisoft also offers another free version of Ewido which was recently bought up. The download link is at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/ewido-anti-spyware-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 I got rid of SpySweeper after the first tryout. One to watch out for is called Spy Spotter. That is one that seems to be more of a trojan then a protective utility/remover of any sort.
