Portable Hardrive Problem

I got this new portable hard drive and I've been taking it from place to place transferring data. One night I plugged it into my computer then I shut it down. The next morning I turned on my computer and the Hard drive didn't show up on my computer. In device manager it shows that it is there. Also when I try to reinstall the hard drive I hear this weird clicking sound inside of it. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it greatly.

This is the hard drive I have.

When the hard drive is clicking or sounding like a popcorn maker then the drive is failing or has already failed. If your operating system fails to recognize the drive, then it has most likely already failed.

I have not tried this myself, but I have been told that you can put the failed drive in a freezer and after it is frozen it may work again for a short period of time giving you a chance to backup the data.

No!!!! It has not failed... i had the same problem, it is because the external hard drive is not getting enough power for the discs inside the hard to spin.... so make sure the hard drive has enough power.

yes use an external power connector or try plugging the drive to the back usb panels as it gives more energy

if it has an external power connector, plug it in (if you havnt already) if it doesnt have one, make sure you plug the hdd into a USB port thats on the motherboard. (so no header thingy in the fornt of the case or a pci card) because those can deliver a bit more power. :)

another option is to buy a (not sure what it's officially called) 2 prong usb cable. 1 will be for data and power and the other will be for usb power. my portable seagate came with this

so did mine, well sort of.... and then i got a new case that had one has 1 x USB power and 1 x USB data transfer cable.... and i love it, no need for external power! :D
