Portal 2 keeps locking up

I just got it the other day and can't ever load a level. I used to be able to go through the menus fine but once I went to start a level it would get to through the loading screen then I would hear sounds skip over an over. I a got a slight visual once but then it just quit out. The screen goes black sometimes then comes back. Recently when I switched all the advanced settings to low (except the memory usage one) the menus started locking up and I would hear the clicking sound made when adjusting stuff in the menus skip over and over.

I disabled in game community as I've seen suggested and tried running steam in compatibility with XP SP3 but to no avail. I also read that I should try running an incompatibility check on the portal 2 app in the steam folder in program files but when I right click on it that whole window freezes up and I have to close it.

All my other games run and my graphics driver is the newest it can be. I have no clue what's wrong other than the game itself having a problem with my hardware.

Make sure that you're running the game as the Admin, as I've seen that get squirrely with Steam in the past... I've also had issues with Portal 2 locking up from time to time, but it's a little more random for me. Also, make sure your video drivers are up to date.

I was thinking it might have been your SLI causing it. Try disabling SLI and seeing if it helps.

Disabling SLI and running the game normally (no admin and no compatibility mode) worked. Once a menu locked up when I accessed it in game though, and I had a slight freeze for a couple seconds in game as well. Sometimes if I spin around or move around enough while any of the robots talk their voices skip. Not sure if it may be part of the game but when I don't move they never skip so I'm assuming it's not part of it.

Anyone have any idea how I can get SLI to work on this game so I can run it smoother maxed out? Currently without it my framerates jump around quite a bit but if nothing major happens I can get a solid 60.

In your Steam library, right click the game and click properties. Click the local files tab and click Verify Integrity of game cache

^Tried that and it said all but one files were verified, this file will be reacquired. I ran it again and got the same message. Tried running it in SLI, the game ran for a second then locked up again.

In the event I can't get SLI working, if I dedicate my second card to physx will it even be used or should I set it to use the first card for physx as well?

Keep on running the verification until it stops. If it doesn't after a good number of times, try a full reinstall, because obviously something there software wise isn't right, otherwise that error wouldn't be there
