Possessed computer/sporadic reeboots/errors, errors, errors

I've been at these computer problems for far too long and am finally asking for help before I take a hammer to this thing.

Gateway E400 Desktop
2.5GHz, 760MB RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2

Due to continuous errors and slow system, I decided to do a clean install.
Starting from scratch, the only added hardware is a printer, a network wireless adapter (Netgear WG111T), and speakers. I run Norton Antivirus 2008 (recently updated) and SpySweeper.

I started receiving sporadic application errors and the program would be shut down. Most frequent is a simple "the system has recovered from a serious error and must be restarted". I get this frequently. I always report these errors, and a few times was given a Microsoft solution that it was a bad driver. Going through that troubleshooting article was fruitless and only made me angry, so I ran a driver scan from driveragent.com and it showed I had eight bad drivers. I've updated all of them and then STILL got a "bad driver" solution from Microsoft after a subsequent "system error" message.

I also got this error in Internet Explorer (just installed 7 as suggested by a solution), but the error still comes.

These errors haunt me!!!!

I have updated all drivers, and then today, twice, the system has done a sporadic reboot in the middle of my research. It shows the blue screen with dialog that refers to BIOS (Oh, I recently updated the BIOS, too, btw, and it sped up my computer but...errors continue). The computer automatically reboots. On the second time around, however, when the system rebooted, my icons for the Netgear equipment were gone from the taskbar. I tried to open the application from Start/Programs but it failed. So I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but this is not the first time this has happened. The system reboots and it's just....GONE. Also on the second reboot, as Windows opened I received two flash notifications from the hardware manager: New hardware found, and then an "unknown device found". I had not added any hardware - so this was most confusing.

I'm sure I'm leaving out valuable information, so please feel free to ask more questions. I would deeply deeply appreciate any help/suggestions/advice you can give me. I'm losing my head over this!!!

Thanks so much.

To stop your system from automatically restarting after a failure, so you can read the failure codes.

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then choose the Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button and deselect the Automatically restart button.

That way you have time to write down any codes you see. If you see any codes post them here so we can help you.

Thank you very much apj101 and paratwa.

I will run the memory test as you suggested, and I will also follow your suggestion, paratwa, so I can retrieve the codes. It did happen again this morning! Thanks so much for your help. I'll be back with some codes.

bsod error codes are never any real use in identifying the problem they just tell you the memory address that failed normally

Okay guys...

I ran the memtest and it came up with "0" errors.

I deselected the "automatic restart" as well, and I'm waiting for it to crash again. lol. It seems to me as I've quickly scanned the blue screen in the past, it does not always have the same errors listed. However, this last time I WAS able to write it down. I've done a bit of research and it seems it could definitely be the source of the problem.

I'm sure you know about this one: 0x00000024

I ran ChkDsk and came up with nothing bad. How do I know if the NTFS file system has problems? How do I check file properties for NTFS.SYS? I'm not sure where to access this file.

Any other suggestions? What now?

One note about the ChkDsk. Is this message normal when running this program:
Type of file system is NTFS
Warning! F parameter not specified
Running chkdsk in read-only mode

Thanks guys.

One other thing. RegCure claims to be able to fix the 0x00000024 error. Do you guys rely at all on registry fix applications like RegCure?

Thanks.

I reviewed the Event Viewer and wrote down all the blue screen errors.

It's been going on a few weeks. Here are the codes I've been getting:

10000050
1000008e
1000000a

ntfs - "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run chkdsk utility on volume C:"

DCOM - "The device \Device\Harddisk0\D has a bad block" (got several of these)

1000000a again
000000c2

Then on 11/2 I received three crashes: 00000024, 10000050, and 1000000a

Today: 00000024

Am I talking too much? Just trying to give as much information as I can. :(

Today, this is what I got again:

STOP: 0x00000024 (plus some...)

Ntfs.sys - Address F72CC763 base at F7289000

Instructions: Disable or uninstall anti-virus, disk defrag or backup utility. Check harddrive configuration and check for updated drivers. Run Chkdsk /f to check for HD corruption. Restart.

apj101 - you said bsod error codes aren't useful at all?? How do we tell what the problem is?

I have run Chkdsk, but before I disabled any anti-virus or backup utility applications. Is this really necessary? I have run a scan for bad drivers/driver updates needed and I'm up to speed there.

ANY HELP??

Thanks so much.
