Possible ceiling on my AMD 64 CPU?

I've been trying to overclock my AMD 64 3000+ ever since I got it about 4 or 5 months ago. Seeing that it's stock at 1.8GHz, and my previous CPU, an AMD Athlon XP at 2.3GHz, I just feel the itch to get it as high as possible. The multiplier is locked, but everything else is up for grabs. I have tried everything possible, and the highest I can get the core speed to is 229MHz (stock 200 x 9). It used to be that I couldn't get it past 214MHz. I don't know, maybe the new place I live at is better for it or something. Anyway, I was wondering if this really is my ceiling, or if I'm missing something. A new PSU is on its' way, so maybe that'll help, and the temps have never risen above 49c even while running Prime95 or playing F.E.A.R. So... any ideas?

Oh, and I'm new here. How y'all doin'? :o

Another thing... I realize that it's impossible to know whether or not this is my ceiling, but I'm asking if there are things that I could do to see if it really is my ceiling. Perhaps be more advantageous with my voltages (RAM, CPU, and chipset), etc. etc. etc. etc.

Get better cooling, and remember to check temperatures when you overclock. Overclocking and better types of ram will help with your overclocking, for example use pc3200 ram not pc2100 ram...

Well, it's dual channel 3200, and as for cooling, I'm not concerned with it yet only because I haven't reached temps to worry about. Once I see that I can reach a certain speed (and temperature along with it) I'll invest in it.

Cooling isn't the problem. You have to keep the HT link and Ram under control in order to overclock successfully. This only becomes a serious problem if your motherboard is unable to change said values.

A comprehensive (not to mention huge) guide on overclocking your chip. Believe me it's worth it to read this as overclocking your single core A64 can bring some pretty large performance boosts.

Questions?

Wow. That was massive. I picked up a few things from there. Off I go to restart the computer and enter BIOS land. Thanks a bunch.

Well, I see no difference. I am actually at 217MHz right now, and will try to get it back to 229, and more if possible. All clocks and voltages are at default setting except the HTT is at 4x, versus 5x. It'll be until tomorrow before I can mess around with it again.

Sounds good.

You won't notice a very big difference until you OC higher than that.. My San diego core can reach 2.8+.. But i'd need to up the volts and i don't want to do that. As of now my settings are; Reference clock: 270mhz x 10(multiplier), Ram on a 5/6 divider (166mhz), Ht link 4x. Voltage at stock.

:)
