Possible hard drive failure?

I do not know if this is the appropriate forum but I'll ask anyways...

My computer has been acting strange

When I go to start it, after shutting it down normally, I use the power button and the computer SEEMS to boot up normally (by the normal audio indicators, fans and what not) however, no screen appears and nothing can be accessed, in fact, the monitor does not even respond. I shut it down by holding the power button in until the computer shuts down and contiune this course of action on it restarts, and when it does restart, it does so normally with no indicators or software problems, at leats to my knowledge. I had the power supply recently removed due to a subsequent power surge and surge protector failure so I began to think it is a hardware problem. If it is I am not sure where to begin. Any help or referral to appropriate board would be much appreciated.

Im sorry, but this may seem like an odd suggestion, but are u sure ur monitored is plugged in and on? Also that surge could have affected your monitor. Its not a hdd failure just to let you know...
 
I am almost positive it isnt the monitor, the noises that continues isnt normal during operation or start up it much louder and persists until the computer is turned off.
 
Yea it could be a number of things... From video card, to motherboard. Try removing everything that isnt necessary to run a computer to eleminate some variables. If your HDD did fail you computer would at least show something...
 
a failed HDD would let the computer turn on, but it wouldent be recongnized....

stuff heats up and expands, then cools and contracts, causeing a shift, try reseating your videocard
 
One other thing, if this is a factory-produced computer, check the diagnostic lights and the manual that came with the computer to see if that can shed any light on the problem.
