Possible to make normal keyboard mute sound etc?

Well, I just put my nice keyboard in the closet because I don't like the feel, but I did like the fact that I could turn off music while I was playing games so I could concentrate more on the game, and do things like turning up the volume, its was nice, can I get a program so I can do this with my current very basic keyboard?
I was thinking of having the numb pad as the sound controls or something
 
I have never heard of anything like this. I bet if you spend a long time googling, you would find something, but chances are it is pretty primitive.
