Possible to upgrade my desktop?

Hey guys,

I have an HP dx2250 desktop here with an AMD Sempron processor and 2GB of ram. Is it possible for me to upgrade it? I have a Nvidia 9800GT video card that I can put in, but it requires a 400 watt power supply and this computer only has a 250 watt. Is it possible to upgrade the processor and power supply?

Just rather upgrade what I have rather than spending money on a whole new rig. I'd like this to be a gaming rig.

Any suggestions on what to throw in here to make it a gaming rig?

If you want to upgrade

1. CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ OEM

2. PSU
CORSAIR CX430 CMPSU-430C is cheap if mail-in rebate work. Should enough for your 9800GT.

If you want a good one, get the 550W

If you want new PC, wait until next year. Both Intel and AMD will change socket.
 
Thanks for the reply! Just curious about the power supply...will my motherboard be able to handle it?
 
The upgrades Daisymtc suggested are good. You should notice an increase in processing power with the Athlon 5000+ Dual-Core over your single-core Sempron processor.

The only possible issue you may have with the power supply is it may not fit in your present case. I doubt it though. The power supply should work with your present system.

If you wanted a bigger upgrade than what has been suggested you are going to need to likely go with a whole new motherboard. I don't think your motherboard will support any Phenom processors.

PSU should fit, his existing is ATX Power Supply according to the link he posted.
