possible to upgrade or inevitable?

Hey this is my first post on the forums i'm glad i finally found a place to get all myy questions solved [hopefully]. I have a Dell deminsion xps D300 [I know its really old. I was wondering if it could be possible to upgrade this machine with just a motherboard and new cpu? My specs if no one knows them are

256 ram
16gb hd
299mhz computer pentium 2

and a whole lot of parts that dont really work now that i cant name [im such a newb to this] I heard that most compuiter cases are atx and i need a specific type of casing for certain motherboards could i fit a newer motherboard/cpu in here and have a better computer then this or would i have to cash out a who new computer. Thanks.
 
if you can find out the max MHZ that the motherboard supports, you can go on Ebay and find a faster CPU.
 
We'll i really know this computer has its limits just my looking at it thats why i want to put some newer parts in it. I want to somehow leave the pentium 2 realm probably pentium 3 or if possible 4 but i think thats a dream thatll never happen
 
we'll im gonna start saving up over the summer and wanted to know what a price range would be so i know what i have to save up too. Guess i cant be a cheap bastard this time and im gonna have to officially get a new comp.
 
a new or newer computer, depends on what your going 2 do with it, all i do with my pc's is surf the internet and check e-mail.
 
I want to be able to surf the internet, download, view my video files on my computer and play/burn dvd's. What are some recommendations/specs for a computer i would need to do all those things?

uhh....no, i would just get one of those Dell Demension B110 desktops for $299. they are pretty good computers.
 
Is there a place online that i could possibly buy these parts and thanks for the spec ideas really appreciate it.
 
[PIII 900MHZ, 512MB RAM, 40-60GB HD, dvd-rom drive] talking about those parts. thanks for the site ill look at it
