Possible to use one single CPU instead of all?

I'm no expert on server boards but I think you should be able to run with only one CPU. I'm not sure about different CPU models, but to be on the safe side, I'd buy two of the same models. If you're going for a render farm, what GPU's have you considered? I'll assume you're going for workstation cards?

Why do you not want to use one of the CPU sockets? Why not go with a single socket board, then? (unless you may want to get another CPU in the future.)
 
I am not 100% sure but I am thinking yes to both of your questions. The only think I would make sure that if one is a Magny-Cours both should be. I could be wrong.

I want to use 1 socket for my initial purchase, and then add new CPUs as I can afford them. (Can't afford $660 x4 for the CPUs all at once lol)

My renderer doesn't make much use of the GPU, so there's not much need for it. Though I suppose I should consider room for adding a GPU, incase I ever need one in the server some day.
