Power a USB port to turn Laptop On via USB

I have this Lenovo ThinkPad R61 laptop currently.

Typically, what I would do is hook up the laptop to an external monitor. The laptop would be closed and a wireless mouse/keyboard would be used. This allows for convenient use for when the laptop is around the house.

However, I'd like to be able to power on the laptop bringing it out of standby, pressing a keyboard button. (Laptop not off --> in standby) Is there anyway to allow a usb port to remain powered while in standby/hibernation to allow this?

Currently I must open the lid to turn the laptop on from standby every time. My hinges are getting old and not as tight as they use to be. This laptop has been great and I'd love to extend its use and get a couple more years out of it.

I'd imagine there is a power setting in the BIOS to allow for USB wake.

I have been in the BIOS and not seen something resembling USB power. Would it be titled in a way where I'd recognize it? Otherwise I don't really know what I'm looking for.

It would specifically be under a Power category. I'm not familiar with the BIOS so I can't say specifically.

I found it this time. It was actually already set to enabled meaning it should be able to charge devices while in either standby, hibernation or turned off. Only down fall is the laptop must be connected to power, but this should never be an issue.

However, when I try to use this function I can not get any recognition that there is power at any of the USB ports and it will not wake my laptop with several keyboards and mice.

This is the only option concerning power at the USB ports. At any rate I can not find any power at them regardless of what device I use.

Nno, you need to look for wake events, which should be under ACPI, or power management; maybe advanced, but probably not.

Just Checked for the third time. lol
If that's the case then what I'm asking is impossible as there are no other options remotely close to what I'm looking for.

Not necessarily; see if there is a way to tell the computer to not go into Standby when the lid is closed. This may be an option in the Operating systems Power settings if not in the BIOS.

I can and am doing that as much as possible.

It's when I shut it off for the day or for half a day. I really prefer to shut it off if not in use for more than 6 hours or so. Standby when it's left in the office and hibernation when it's unplugged.

Then the next time I turn it on I must re open the lid and then push the on button. Sounds kind of stupid but I'm just looking for that small bit of convenience that every other machine seems to have.

Sometimes opening the laptop lid turning it on and then closing it messes up the external graphics feed where I must re-open the lid and then close it again to send the signal.

No big deal, been doing this ever since using an external monitor.

Maybe it's time for a small mod-- add an externally-accessible switch.

Haha, that's actually quite brilliant. I would have never thought of something that easy. This sounds like the most doable thing. I got room to stuff a switch in an unused bay. Just have to figure out the nature of the switch.

I'm guessing it just closes the circuit at an instant and doesn't need to close the circuit continuously?
