Power button

Toshiba Satellite Model 2800-S201 : With electrical plugged into wall outlet , when I depress the "POWER " button , nothing happens . I wait, wait . Nothing .

Then , I slide the spring loaded "DVD / CD media tab" ( which is located at the base of the monitior screen ) to the right , and it fires up . There is nothing in the media tray .

When machine is running and I hit the POWER button to turn off , it still runs . On a second exact duplicate system , all is aok . The power utton will fire it up and shut it down .
I do not understand how or why the " DVD/ CD " media button is playing an active role in the processes of START or Shut Down .

Can anyone explain this ?

Check inside the computer, see if the cords to/from the power button are attached.

As for the media button.....I dunno

Are you sure it isn't hibernating, instead of shutting down? You should have to press the power button for 5 secs to turn it off. If it was hibernating, pressing the button would wake it up

I learned that the DVD slide button should power the laptop even if power is off. I speculate that you are permitted to listen to CD's w/o powering on system .

Disassembled unit to access the inner workings of the ON button .

There are 2 functions melded into one section: the power button for on/off and the miniscule black pole which gets depressed as you close the display lid to automatically turn off laptop --much as an auto's interior lights are turned off as you close the car door.

The "auto close" does turn off the laptop .

Just the ON/OFF power switch has lost functionality. There is a translucent blue plastic strip enclosing a 3 wire set that leads from the on/off button to a secret connection under a metal retaining strip.

I am guessing that this is electrical issue , not electronic malfunction.

Any guidance ? Anything replaceable ?
