emachine 500a emonster.

messed up about 2 months ago so i reformatted the whole thing with restore cd. now when i shut down it turns off by itself which is a good thing but the next time i go to turn it on its "ticking" and the power button light is blinking. i have just been turning off surge protector but want to know what the problem is ?

thanks

By "ticking", do you mean it's actually making a tick noise? Is it from any internal speaker, or is this some sort of mechanical noise? Are any fans running? Or is it silent except for this "ticking"?
Does the power button light start blinking as soon as the unit is shut down, or does it start doing this all by itself, without any intervention from you? My eMachines box from 2003 only has the power light blinking when it's in Standby, and tapping a keyboard key wakes it up.

nope it is shut down not on at all. the light blinks and it "ticks" but not from a speaker. no fans running. doesnt do it right after shut down. not sure whatthe time is till it starts though.

this thing was built around or before 1996. i can wiggle the mouse and it doesnt make it stop. the only thing that makes it stop is me turning the computer on.

Only possible solution I myself see is that it's something wonky with the motherboard, especially if it runs fine otherwise. Other than that, I have to admit I have no clue at all except for the very remote possibilty that there's a BIOS setting that activates an alarm/auto switch-on, but it's going to some sort of deep standby, almost like a near-hibernation. But with a PC so old, I don't even know for sure if there's any power management support at all!

i have a strong inclination that it will get replaced by a Dell either XPS 400 or the $499 one. i did rough estimates on customizing both and the XPS was going to run 1578 and the Entertainment level one ran around 875. with the options i thought i wanted. (really have no clue as to what i really need to make a educated guess) i cant build one. it just isnt feasible for me to do that in my area. i just cant see why the price is almost double and both would do what i want.
burn CD's, DVD's, want to make videos off of digital camera. and basically surf the web. with dial up for now. i have a request in to get DSL ( if that is what its called through the phone company. ) in my area. and keeping books for a very small company. last year profit was - $862.
i do want a flat panel monitor at least 17" preferably 19"

any suggestions ? anybody ?

I got a 17" ViewSonic VA721 LCD monitor for just $199 at OfficeMax a few months ago, and I love it.

Most any PC with a decent amount of RAM (go for at least 1GB), afast enough processor, and big enough hard drive will enable you to rip and edit video. The other tasks are a piece of cake for just about any PC now.

I looked at a review of the XPS 400 here http://compreviews.about.com/od/maindesk/gr/DellXPS400.htm
and the reviewer thinks it's a bit on the bare bones side. Only word processing software, no DVD burner, no video card capable of ripping from a camera, small HDD...

IMHO, if you want a PC that will do all that for you, and prebuilt, you're looking at a minimum of maybe $800 or so. :(

Just my two centavos.
