Power Over eSATA Issues

I got a kit that gives me an eSATAp port by plugging in power, internal USB and internal SATA into this one card. I have a Seagate FreeAgent Goflex drive with the eSATAp connector. The drive doesn't really work when plugged into the port. In order to get it to show once plugged in I need to scan for hardware changes in device manager. it always freezes up transfers and it takes a restart & scan for new hardware to get the drive going again. The drive works fine with USB 2.0 except it's half as fast as SATA. the port seems to work OK. I'm thinking it's the motherboard or some settings I need to change in bios or in Windows 7. How do I fix this?

Thanks Guys

Is your SATA controller set to AHCI mode? If not, it's driver likely doesn't support hot swapping and that's why it's freezing and you need to restart to get it to work. I've got a post here that tells you how to switch controller modes after windows is installed, I'll edit it in when I find it.

I've since tried this method and it works.

I am having the same problem but I do not know how to do anything in my BIOS. I have looked but there arent any options. Its all grayed out to where i cant highlight it.

Is this for that DV7 in your signature? It has an eSATA port that I would hope comes configured correctly from the factory but from the complaints I'm seeing on HPs site that may not be the case. The first thing I would suggest is a BIOS update, I don't think they let you adjust many settings so the update may have what you need fixed.

yes its the DV7 and I hate to sound like a total idiot but how do I find the updates for my BIOS?

EDIT: and if it helps. when I had the hard drive plugged into the esata port and I tried to boot the laptop it couldn't find the boot log so I think it was trying to boot from the hard drive.

there was an option for boot order i just didnt wanna mess with it. If i break my computer right now ill have no way to get on here on ask the experts lol

Alright well I updated my BIOS and the problem still persists. There arent very many options in the BIOS to do much besides change the time and boot options.

Are there any "Advanced" "Hardware" or "Boot" tabs in the BIOS? It's silly if they've locked down even those features...

But the setting you are looking for will likely be there, under the SATA (RAID) Controller, most likely.

There is a boot tab but I cannot not do much of anything. I can re arrange the order and thats all. There are not any other options. Stupid HP

If you plug in the drive before booting and rearrange the order so the removable isn't first it should work. This seems stupid though, eSATA is supposed to be hot swappable.
