power problem?

I have an HP with 512/200g that is 5 years old. The tower will turn on (light) and the fan over the processor will run. Light on the back near power plug is on however the monitor does not repond, keyboard does not respond nor do my dvd/cd rom drives open. I have tried different monitors same thing. I reseated my graphic card still the same. I also tried attaching the monitor to my old graphic slot. No go. I checked my connections inside and it looked my fan conntected to the back of my computer is unplugged. Everything else is fine. I am hoping it is something easily replaced. Any ideas?
Thanks

Time for a new system. The board is the most likely hardware that quit on you by the description you gave there. When you see fans runs and drive lights light up but nothing on the keyboard which is connected directly to the board itself there's nowhere else to look.

I was hoping that would not be the case. Is there a way to get my hard drive info onto a new system? I have the hard drive that came with the system and then added a secondary hard drive a couple of years ago. I don't want to lose the info. Thanks again.

You can always take the drives out and plug them into a different computer. Just make sure that the jumpers are set correctly on the back of the drive.

Is your system speaker connected? Are there any error beeps?

You may want to try a minimal startup, just CPU, board, Video card and one stick of RAM, however a faulty board is a very likely suspect.

On many of the older systems a message would come up onscreen without any beep codes being if the cpu or memory went bad. The lack of the lights on the keyboard and no signal to the monitor while other things appear normal suggests that no power is getting through the board itself. But after 5yrs. of use anything could be seen.

When you have a new system up and running whether you custom build or buy another prebuilt the one or more drives are installed as slave drives to the working host in the new case. In fact the present secondary could be used as a backup drive on the new system as well. The one problem would be if you were running an older version of Windows other then 2000 like 98 or ME where the files needed an older program for them.

The NTFS partition will help you there for easy file recovery. The cpu fan generally runs on very low voltage. A bad cap in the supply would hamper getting the system running while everything would light including the keyboard. You know the power button is ok. That only leaves the board, cpu, and/or supply. A faulty memory stick wouldn't stop everything from powering up.
