Power (?) problems

Hi all.

I'm having strange problem with my computer. It can suddenly just shut down with no obvious reason, and won't come on but after 10 minutes or so.

Also my usb and ps/2 ports aren't working properly; some usb devices suffers data transfer errors or some devices are not found/start at all. Ps/2 port burned my optical mouses infra-led, and sometimes keyboard stops to function and the lock-lights keep on flashing...

Sound like bad earth connection or such? But i'm not too familiar with these machines. And of course the computer is already out of warranty :(

What might cause this?

Motherboard: Asrock K7S8XR3.0
Processor: 1800MHz Amd

What kind of PSU are you using? That could be the problem. Do you know what lead to this problem, or did all of this stuff just kind of start happening at once?

Like you said, if the computer wont turn on for about 10 minutes after it shuts down, that could be due to an overheating problem.

Im thinking a power problem....i had an issue once where my computer would shut off randomly and then to get it back on, i had to unplug the cord from the psu and plug it back in. as for your ps/2 drivers and such, it is possible that a random shutdown corrupted those drivers.

I don't know, its rather old, 4 years i think, 250W or 300W... But i have not added any new hardware reacently.

Now if I think, my girlfriend swapped ps/2 mouse (several times i think, i wasn't home) without shutting computer down... Could it be it? Some voltage peak...? I don't know. In schools electronics classes, almost every problem we had got to do with bad earth connection, could some circuit, or such, been burned? Oh, I also have changed gfx heatsink (no idea when :P ), and unplugged power cord then, I'll try to plug the cord out and in again.

CPU temperature seldom raises above 60 degrees celsius, according to MotherBoard Monitor software. Case not above 37 degrees, or such.

If you can, try swapping power supplies. try either throwing another psu in your computer and running off of that or taking the psu you currently have and running it on another system. This would either rule out/pinpoint cause of problem relating to your psu.

Or simply have a look at the voltages in ther BIOS or via some hardware management program to see if they are accurate/stable :)

What kind of voltages there should typically be? What software would be good to see the voltages in XP?

If there is instability or too high/low voltage, what then?

Motherboard monitor show the following voltages and temperatures.
voltages.GIF

Negative voltages show "a little" bit disturbing...

What to do?

Well if the voltages are unstable then itd be best to change the PSU but since you've dont that and got it running, congrats :)
