Power problems

My computer has problems with booting up. It keeps saying it suffered a power failer but it only happens when i have my GPU installed. it used to work with my GPU installed but now it dosen't. does anyone know why this is happening?

My GPU is a GeForce 9600GT
It needs 500w of power
I have 550w
 
It's usually not a good idea to have only 50W of reserve power. Because you still need power to your monitor (maybe 20W), processor (20-130W) fans and whatnot, so right there you're way over 550W. You should replace your power supply with a 1000W. Also, power supplies are most efficient at 50% capacity. Hope that helps.
 
but it used to work perfectly for about a year and all of a sudden it dosen't. I just brought that PSU and i don't really want to get a new one just right now. any way i can decrese the amount of power i need?
 
another question- do you have most current drivers? not really any way to decrease your power needs other than to use a different video card.
 
i still have my old PSU, what if i put that on with my new one so that theu share the powerload. would that work?
so i use the new one to power the GPU. and the other one to power the rest of my computer. the old one has 400w
 
taking out one of the hard drives won't help to much. but using two PSUs MAY work. it's just the power rating of, even your higher one (550W), is just the bare minimum for that GPU alone, also you'd have to figure out a way to thread the power cord to the outside of the pc with double PSUs.
 
well the gpu use to work with the psu
i had another look at the GPU and it needs a min of 400w and is recommand at 500w

i'd say that, even though you just got that power supply, it's just not enough wattage for your system, your're gonna need a higher rated one. and again, make sure the drivers are the most current ones because they insure maximum performance, compatibility, and possibly, SLIGHTLY less power usage through the better firmware integration.

just one more thing, i'm looking at the drivers but i'm not sure if my OS is XP 64-bit or just normal XP
and i still don't know wht it happened all of a sudden. i mean it worked perfectly until now.....
 
what are the specs of your system? processor, motherboard etc. if you don't know, try the program PC wizard, it's pretty good

ok, since your processor does support a 64 bit OS, i'm pretty sure that you do have a 64 bit OS.
 
it could have burned out the PSU. the ratings for the PSU are usually the continuous wattage rating, they do have peak wattages, but you can't always run them that high because they're not made to run continuously that high, just temporarily.
