Power Source for Graphics Cards

Hi everyone,

1. Can someone please explain where the 7900GS (and similar cards
needing a dedicated power supply) draws its power from? I mean,
there's a power cord alright, and one end goes into the card itself,
so where does the other end go? Into the motherboard? Into the SMPS?
Or a plug point on my wall?

Thanks

From the P/S in the computer, sometimes its a molex-floppy power plug or a 6 pin power plug from the P/S to the video card

The card get some power from the expansion slot, and the newer, more demanding cards have either a molex or PCI-E power connector which attaches to the power supply.

well.. all cards still draw power from the expansion slot.. just the higher end cards nowday's need more than that, so they get an extra power supply as addition to the power comming from the motherboard

Isnt that what I said? Or are you just telling him again :P

My card is lame because it requires a floppy mloex which is usually at the end of a chain of molexes that are hard to hide away.......

the video card draws power from the power supply. my friends running a 7900gs on a 420w single 12v 18a so you ought to be fine with anything that powerful or more.
