power suply test?

My computer has an extremo 550 watt max power supply. It suddenly refuses to turn on. Is there a simple test to tell if the problem is the power supply or in the associated circuitry?

You may have to recycle the supply itself by first setting the breaker switch to the off position to unplug the ac cord and then switching that back on. Then you press the power switch on the front of the case to see if there is a momentary flash of the power led or drive lights. That discharges the capacitors in the supply itself. Once that is done reverse the process and try starting up the system. If nothing is seen the other option is to shop for a supply tester. Antec has one in stores for about $10.

The other thing to look at is all power connections especially if you have been inside the case lately. If you were moving the wiring harness around the plugs for the power switch on the small block of pins may have been pulled off or lifted off on their own. That will stall everything. The last option isn't too good where you simply replace a bad supply.

maybe a stupid question.. but did you check if the on/off switch of you case is still propperly connected to the motherboard? :o

stick a paper clip in the black pin and the green pin of the 20/24 pin connector. If the PSU starts up, then it's probably working.

fine suggestions

This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks folks. Also, there are no stupid questions, only insecure people who need their ego's stroked who think so.
