power supply for Nvidia

I have a slimline pc (hp pavillion slimline)
and i upgraded the GPU from the integrated to a Nvidia geforce 9600
(which some people say required a 300w power supply an others say 400w)
well i have a 300w power supply and recently its been getting HOT
will a bigger power supply help it cool down a bit

If that is the stock PSU that came with the prebuilt PC then I would definitely change it out, especially since you upgraded the graphics card. Even though it meets the correct wattage requirement, a low quality PSU (like the ones HP puts in their prebuilt machines) should be replaced if you're going to upgrade the graphics card.

By no means should a G94 chipset (9600GT) be powered by a 300W PSU> Never, repeat never. An underpowered GPU can get hotter as a result. I wouldn't use that machine until you get a new case (to fit your new PSU) and a new PSU (with a minimum of 26A on the 12V rail). You should also download ntune and crank up the fan. Trust me this is a disaster waiting to happen with that PSU>

well its not the orig PSU
but a lot of people said the GPU would be fine with this wattage
turns out that im just getting a new PC in april
it is just necessary for my lifestyle
(ordering a good one from ibuypower.com)

I agree that if it is the PSU is low quality it is a disaster waiting to happen, but, once again, you can power a PCIe card on a 300W PSU, including a 9600GT BUT depending on which model.

If it the 96W card, which you can identify because it requires a PCIe connector, no, a 300W unit will not be enough, but if it is the 59W, which does not need the PCIe connector, a decent quality 300W unit would be enough

Yeah my post didn't update somehow. I meant, please show me a quality 300W unit used by Dell. thats the point here, a dell 300W PSU that you would be happy to slam a PCIe card in.

So, can you show me a 300W Dell unit that you would be happy to put a PCIe card in?

Oh, and also to OP, you can't just get a new PSU, nor can you just get a 9600GT. You are using a slimline case, so you will have to get a low profile card and a micro-ATX PSU, but things will then be getting very, very cramped in there.

New case, new PSU, new video card is what you will need for this to work, in that order, you get them in any other order and you will have parts sat around unusable until you can get the preceding part

yeah it is the GPU that doesnt need the PCIe connection
and i knew that i couldn't get any PSU or GPU haha
