Power Supply - how to you choose what cable to use?

I'm building my first PC over the weekend. Plodding along slowly to make sure I do my due diligence being that it's my first PC build and lots of questions are popping up because of it.

My PSU is a Corsair TX650W

How do you know what cable to use? Is it as simple as - if it fits - that's the right cable to use?

* The 20-24Pin cable sticks out like a sore thumb

* PCI-express cables are labeled as such.

* 2 long cables with what looks like 4 x SATA power connections each ( total 8 )
I think I can use this cable to power any SATA device? The online Manual that goes with my OEM hard drive looks to use a legacy power cable - and a guide brace to make sure the SATA cable goes in with a strong base of support.

Are there any tips or precautions that I should be aware of before attaching the SATA power cable - or SATA cable itself? It doesn't look like as durable of a connection to sheer force stress as it's IDE predecessor. I don't want to accidentally break the SATA off and I've had zero prior experience workin with em

* 2 long cables with what looks like 4 x ( 4 hole male connector plugs ) - ( total of 8 Plugs - with a small connector at the end of each cable. Are these Legacy plugs?
I think I can use these for case fans - and my Optical Drive or anything else that has a power plug which fits this configuration - but I'd like a confirmation before I jump in and go that route.

Are my assumptions correct - or is there anything else I should be sure to make note of before jumping in and connecting these power cables to my various devices?

Thanks

More or less what you said. If it fits its the right cable. On harddrives, if it has a molex and a SATA power connector, use one or the other, not both. The long cable your talking about with 4 x ( 4 hole male connector plugs ), those are Molex power connectors. The little power connector on the end is for like floppy drives.

Thanks a bunch,

I got most of it hooked up right now - and want to fire her up this weekend. Hopefully today - if I can get everything put together without any new unanswered questions.
