Alright, I recently purchased the following:

I am building a NAS machine using FreeNAS. I've had some experience with these before and figured I'd have a go with building one from scratch. I have several hard drives lying around (a few 1TB) that I was planning on using. However, to test to see if the motherboard would POST and read my preinstalled SD card with FreeNAS on it before connecting any hard drives, I hooked it up to my existing 350W supply, here(I'm not running a lot right now and will be upgrading as this is not NEARLY enough power for all the hard drives I want to be running), connected the power switch from the case I was going to use and powered it up. The CPU fan, and power supply fan spun up and then shut off almost immediately.

I'm not sure if this is the power supply or the mobo in this case. I have the 24 pin and the 4 pin connected to the mobo as instructed. Most power supplies that I've run into that are dead simply do not work. What do you think? I'm pretty sure it's the power supply, since everything else is brand new and does TRY to start. Just checking before I purchase a new supply.

It does sound like it's your PSU causing the problem, but if you can, you should test with another PSU before you spend your money on a new one. Maybe use the one from your desktop if you can :)

Yeah, I considered using my desktop power supply, thing is, I'm pushing my luck as it is. I have 4 1TB hard drives connected in RAID 0 with no backup. If ANYTHING happens, I lose everything (which is why I am building this guy actually, to move everything over there instead). I'll have to tread carefully in that case as it's quite full already.

Did you use the brass standoffs between the case and motherboard before installing it? And yes, sometimes it can be the psu that is bad. In fact, I just replaced a psu over a month ago that basically did the same thing that yours is doing.

Not talking about the shutdowm problem, but could be part of it. Are you using a video card? The Athlon II you got does not have onboard video, even though its a socket FM1. If you using the display ports on the motherboard there will be no video.

Yeah, I'm using the brass standoffs to offset the motherboard. Also, I do have a video card installed, it's an older PCI Express, but all it needs to do is see the command line. I tried booting without any peripherals attached to see if it was the video card or anything else, but again, it starts and then shuts right back down. Looks like I'm going to have to get another power supply.

Anyone had experiences with DiabloTek? Any good? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817822008 That's the one I'm looking to get. Also, some legacy to sata converters will be purchased.
