Power Supply Question?

what are some do's and donts about power supply's i got a new vide card that says min 500 watts and i installed it onto my pc which my pc has 400 watts and it runs and i was wondeirng if i overclock this card or run it on my pc would i risk the chance of burning out my PSU or overheating it?

I wouldnt overclock it but the card should run fine but i would get a new powersupply cause that one might not hold out for much longer. what are the amps on the 12v rail if its good then you should be able to run it and overclock it and watts dont matter as amps do but there still important. i would reccommend getting a new powersupply as soon as possible. take a look at powersupply 101 to learn more about them http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=10764
 
Depends on the quality of the PSU. A good 400W is better than a cheap 500W. Look particularly at the amperage on the +12V rails.

Insufficient power problems will usually result in random restarts or instability, although cheaper units may fail completely if overloaded.

Which card? Most high end cards usually say something like "500W with minimum 25A on 12V line" or something more detailed :)
