Power supply question

It has a 20-pin connector so it should work, unless some sort of freak accident occurs, but I wouldn't suggest buying that PSU. Cheap PSU = almost certain death to your PC...but that's overexageratting a bit. A 500 watt PSU for under $30 is usually a sign of craptacular quality.
 
"Craptacular"? I would say it is far more like the "Disaster waiting to happen" scene there. When something craps out inside the supply it could very easily damage the board if there was a sudden surge!
 
You can use any 20 or 20+4 pin PSU with a 20 pin motherboard. This expands your choices significantly. You can even use a 24 pin PSU, and just overhang the remaining connections.

There's no need to worry about the 12V connector, just leave it unplugged.

The Hipro HP-P500W should be fine at that pricerange. This would give you upgrading potential to a newer system.

These old systems regulate CPU voltage from the +5V line, rather than the +12V. A unit like the Enermax EG301P is well designed to handle this type of loading scenario.

I'm assuming that you're using a low-end system, without a high powered video card, and realistically you won't stress either of these units. I'd probably favour the Hipro, but any of the budget recommendations in PSU101 would be fine as well.

That's one possibility, and basically the worst case situation, although i've seen it happen many times. It's also quite possible that the PSU itself will die after a few months without taking anything else with it, or be insufficient to power the system (cheap PSU manufacturers will often enormously overrate their units). In this case you may experience stability issues, random restarts, and the like.
 
When you see any 500w supply for $26.99 start asking questions. Unless someone has a great sale on good brand going you're not going to get anything worth bothering with. I recently picked up an Antec TP II 550w model for $79.99 "on sale". That usually sees $96.99 or higher just for that brand at newegg. I made the mistake(once and once only) of ordering a supply along with the case. The supply(cheapest lump of...) quit inside of two weeks! Never again was the thing I was thinking there.
