power supply wattage, how much

I dont understand why deals on power supplys have such wide wattage differences. Whats a good general rule for chossing theproper power supply for a new system?

2 -1gig rams a dvd drive ,decent hard drive, decent sound .

500 watts would probably be a good amount for that build, with a bit of room for upgrades if you ever wanted.

You mean loads!

Look at my PC, I'm running it off a 380watt PSU with no problems!

People overkill PSU's all the time.
