Hi all, pc won't boot but power supply works. I've looked through the forum already and google so that's done.

Computer won't boot at all, no lights or anything. I've taken switch off and used screwdriver to try boot and that don't work, i've tested the power cable and that works, tested power supply and that works, I've taken everything out and unplugged everything except the main power cable to the board and the 4pin. I mean the 24 pin is connected and 4 pin, everything else is disconnected. Still nothing. Now the pc worked fine till i stopped using it, all i did was take the hard drive and ram out. I don't understand why all of a sudden it doesn't want to work.

can anyone help?

p.s. it's intel d945gtp motherboard btw, pentium 4 3.6 chip, old computer.

So did you put the ram back in? The computer won't boot without ram inserted. It's also possible that you had static buildup and you touched something and zapped it. Try resetting the cmos by unplugging the power supply, remove the cmos battery, press the power button a few times and then wait 5 minutes. Then reconnect everything and try booting up.

Not quite sure what you mean here or what the exact story is, but you need memory (ram) in order to boot. If you are indeed trying to boot up without any memory, that would be your problem. You need more than the 24 pin and 4 pin in order to do so.

Try the minimum setup (to successfully post): PSU, proper power cables/pins, memory, cpu, cpu fan/heatsink.

actually no i took the ram out, simply coz i wanted to see if i could get some power in there. Had it in the first try though. Ok tomorrow ill try put the ram in and take battery out. Thanx.

mishkin , even with the basic startup requirements it didn't want to boot, that's why i took out everything and just plugged it into the power. took ram etc out. i even checked the heatsink fans connection and it was plugged into the board.

24 pin was the power connecter, atx one.

ok thanx guys ill try put the ram in, i know with the newer boards you don't need ram inserted for the pc to actually switch on, it won't boot obviously but it will switch on. That's why i took the ram out. maybe on the older boards like the one im using, you need ram in. Let me try it tomorrow and I'll post again if i run into more problems, thanx for the help everyone.

Do you have a system speaker plugged into the motherboard connection? Without ram inserted you will hear a series of beeps telling you no memory was installed.

Follow my procedure to reset the cmos the ram doesn't need to be removed to reset it.

You need memory installed to POST. On "newer boards" as well as old ones. It's kind of an absolute requirement.

I had the same error with my computer but I figured out that I got the HDD Light, Power Light, and Power On/Off cables switched around on the motherboard. I found the answer in my motherboard's instruction booklet. I cleaned my computer with air before inserting my new power supply.

thanx to all for the help. It turned out it was the power cable. I did check the power cable by plugging it into the monitor and it actually powered the monitor so i find that very strange. Anyway so i just changed the power cable. I can breathe easier now :) actually i can't coz the hard drive is stuffed but i'll have to use another one . Thanx again to all for the help.
