Power supply

Here is the deal. My fan in my power supply went out causing it to burn up. It is an Ultra 500 watt. Since it is under warranty they sent me a new one but it is a 550 watt. I installed the new power supply but the computer would not come on. I check the four pin connecter that goes to the mother board because it did not feel right sure enough it was black inside and one of the pins had some plastic melted around it causing the plug to not seat properly.

I replaced the motherboard with a new one using my old memory and processor. I did make sure everything was compattable before the swap. My problem now is when I start the computer it sometimes locks up. What I mean is it just stops working. The mouse and the keyboard stop responding.

I have an 80gig hd, cd burner, cd rom, motem, and a A drive. Two gigs of memory. I don't think I am getting any where close to the 550 watts.

But just in case I started removing one item at a time until there was nothing attached to the mother board but the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Still get the same thing. Will be doing somthing on the computer and it just freezes up. I can reboot and go a little more or sometimes on the reboot it freezes up and I may have to reboot several times before I can get it going.

Is there some way for me to test the power supply. I have a digital volt meter. Will that work? I was thinking of checking the power at each plug while the computer is operating and then when it locks up check them again. I am not sure of what the voiltage should be coming out of the plugs.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be. I only have two choices that I can see. Bad power supply or bad mother board. I guess it could be a windows issue. I guess I could reinstall my windows to see what that does. I just hate chasing a ghost.

Any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any advice you may have.

When you change the motherboard out without doing some preemptive strikes against windows:D before you change the boards. Windows will freak out. If your wanting to save your data boot to your Windows CD and do a (repair) install. Its always best to do a (clean) install if you change boards out.

I would say the "no cost option" would be to re-install as it could be a corrupt driver or system file causing it to freeze. At least you would then know the OS is not causing it.

I will do the complete reinstall of windows. I will save what I can from my documents ect. and reinsatll windows. Thanks for the advise. I will post back in a day ro two to let everyone know how it went. It seems like I am constantly reinstalling windows. I bet I do this about three times or more a year. I am using McAfee anti virus could that have somthing to do with these issues? Well going to get started now in the reinstall. Thanks again.

Well started doing the reinstall today but kept hanging up never could get the windows to install. The thing finallly quit working all together. I think the mother board is bad. When I unplug the four pin plug from the mother board everything will start up. When I plug it in the power supply will not start and nothing else will either. Going to send mother board back and try again.

Thanks: MJM
