well my switch decided to crap out. i shut down the computer and the next time i tried to turn it on nothing happend. i opened the case and got to the switch played with the wires alittle and got it to work after a while. then after puting the computer together again it would turn on . so is there a way to fix it or do i have to get a new case. (Antec sonata II)

The switch simply shorts the two jumpers the wires are connected to. It should be quite simple to replace the switch or rig up something else. I mean I sometimes cut computers on using a screw driver!

That would be a royal shame and pain to have to replace the case for one push button. The thing to look at before the additional expense is the situation. Are the contacts staying open when that is pressed or closed? If you can get in there with a little compressed air it may be a piece of debris if the contacts aren't stretched.

The last thought before buying a new case is seeing if you can decrease the space between contacts by using a small hand tool to flex them back inplace. I don't think replacement switches are available so you would have to ship the case to them for that? Have an old junker case you can pull a similar if not close match switch out of?

what do u mean by the "contacts" also i wouldnt really mind switching the case because its kinda beat up from moving, and i still have 2 years left from antec. i would rather resolve the issue if u can be more clear. ty

In some switches(not too many) you can try to get inside or to the exposed area to reach in and try lifting a metal strip inside the switch itself. When you push the momentary button you are pushing one metal strip(contact) against another. Each has a single wire soldered to them. This is what makes the quick contact and swift release when you release the button itself. Apparently one of the two is pushed away from the original level where the other quickly touches it. Sealed switches without being able to bend a contact back inplace without breaking the switch are hopeless however.

i opened it and found that the "metal strip" has broken off. its really hard to work on it seeing as the switch is so small i guess i can try soldering it if that does not work i will just replace the box from antec.

i noticed that it is not solderd it is actually pushed in to a small box with an opening on both sedes next to the spring. i will try to bend it and put it back in. then see what happens.

Those can be tough at times due to the small size. If you can correct it and get the switch back together intact you should be set for awhile. But you know that will only last for a limited period of time before the same thing happens again. All you can do there is a quick fix for temporary use. After that you will be back to square one again.

Here I have the option for power on by mouse set rather then keyboard to prevent "little fingers" from toying around. A click on the mouse fires the system up. But you first have to enter the bios setup right at first powering on to get in there and enable one or two of those options. That may be a little awkward while you are leaning over to look inside right at that moment. Borrow a mouse if needed or pick a cheapie for temp use when you have problems like this. Having a spare keyboard and mouse around can help.
