Powering up problem

Dear all,

I have a strange problem to do with one of my machines powering on. Basically I had this one machine that wouldn’t turn on unless the Ethernet cable was unplugged. Once this was done, the machine would turn its self on, even without having to press the on button. So the first thing I tried to do was disable the Ethernet port and see if bypassing it allowed It to be turned on normally. This then stopped the machine from turning on at all! Regardless of whether the cable was plugged in or not! So I then took the machine apart and took out the CMOS battery to get back the bios default settings. This then made the machine come back on again, but still with the original problem. So then I tried replacing the motherboard with one from a spare machine we had. Still doesn’t work but now I have ended up with a very strange problem. Basically the computer will now turn on fine, with or without the Ethernet cable in. One catch though…you have to use a fresh power cable each time you want to turn it on. This sounds totally bizarre, but its as though it remember the last cable that it turned on with, and once its used it, it doesn’t want to know! Give it a fresh one and its fine…until the next time you want to turn it on…any ideas?

Thanks!

I have never heard of an ethernet cable causing problems with powering up. Something really isnt making sense here.

It’s onboard! The Ethernet cable stopping it from powering up really is a mystery to me. But now I’m more concerned about the machine not turning on unless it has a fresh power cable plugged into it! I can live with just popping the Ethernet cable out until it boots up, but its going to be a very expensive computer to run if it requires a new power cable every time! I really don’t understand, I mean how does it know that the power cable has already been plugged into it! It’s as though it’s got some type of AI lol….Sky net is already starting!

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hmm.. None really that I can think of but two:

1. Disable the onboard ethernet and stick in a NIC - see if that helps maybe?

2. Buy a WHOLE lotta ethernet cables ;)

Or you might want to try a different router.. Just want to illuminate every possible issue..

Aviation Man,

It’s not the Ethernet cables that are the main problem now! Although that too is still is one of them. It’s the power cable that it remembers! Not the Ethernet cable. But yes the original problem still remains, which was where the computer will not turn on unless the Ethernet cable is unplugged. If you read my first post, I tried a few things to fix this and now I’m having the strange problem with the power leads. Just forget about the Ethernet cable for a second. Right, if you put a fresh POWER CABLE into the back it will turn off and on like normal. But once you turn it off and back on, it won’t work, it’s dead. The only way you can get it to work is by giving it a fresh POWER CABLE. Then it will turn on and off fine…until you come to turn it on again. Once it has used the POWER CABLE it doesn’t want to know! It needs a new one!!

Ps. Sorry for shouting but people are getting confused with what I mean. If you read through properly you will understand! Thanks! ¬
