powers off at times

hey guys,

my pc has been turning off lately. sometimes it'll do a standard "shutting off" by closing programs. at other times it'll just cut the power off. when i attempt to turn the pc back on it won't turn on unless i flip the power supply switch off/on then press power. at times it'll power up for 2 seconds then shuts off. at times it'll turn on normally and last for a couple of days even weeks.

what can the problem be? temps are normal. i thought it was the power supply but i get the same problem after replacing it. i'll run memtest once i find my cd. how can i check if the mobo is dying? i don't have case speakers so i can't listen to beep codes. i've been reading some info about the case power switch being defective... can this be it?

Have you checked to make sure everything is firmly connected? Because it could be something like the hdd is lose maybe? I'm sorry I can't really be of more help.
 
everything's connected. that's the first thing i thought was wrong.

no viruses. i'm fully protected. i also updated to windows 7 and still have the same problem.

ran memtest for 5 hours. no problems.

used everest and bios to check temps. my case is well fanned

today it happened again. currently seeing if resetting bios does the trick. i'm thinking it has to do with the case power button. i configured bios to only turn off when the button is held for 5 sec. currently waiting for it to shut down.

Does gigabyte have a utility similar to Asus Turbo Key? If so, you could download it and set a small (it only has to be .05GHz or so to notice) overclock on and wait to see if it activates/deactivates it.

If you haven't heard of it, it changes your power button so instead of turning your computer off, it instead acts as a one touch overclocking button. You press it, it raises the clocks, mulitplyer, voltages, whatever you set it to, of your CPU, you press it again, it goes back to stock. You would be able to use it to see if your power button is being "pressed"
 
not sure if gigabyte has that kind of overclocking tool but for now it turned out to be the power switch... or the power switch cable.

what i did was used the reset switch instead. so far so good.
