I was wondering wat precautions should be taken before building a comp becuase i was reading a few "how to build a computer" guides and some talk about how there is static electricity everywhere, that you should build a comp in a static free enviroment or else you risk destroying the pc components.

would in the garage be fine on a flat carboard box? or how about on a wooden table in the kitchen?

one guide was talking about a wristband that earths you..wats does that mean? im geussing it de-stactic(sp??) you....

and where would you get an anti-static mat and one of those wristbands??? but are they really needed??
 
I work in my garage on the concrete. I dont think antistatic wrist bands are needed. Just ground yourself frequently and you'll be fine.
 
i worked on most of my builds on the carpet. lol not the safest, but just be sure to keep yourself grounded.
 
I always work in my room, which is carpet. I dont ground myself either, i just touch the chassis of the case before i begin.
 
get all you parts together in one place. I always build on the living room floor (yes carpet). Just grab the case before touching components and you'll be fine. You're probably more likley to mess stuff up putting the Heat Sink on then frying it with static
 
thats what i ment by grounding yourself, touching the case. just make sure u touch the metal part
 
I was also concerned about this, how long are you "good to go" until you have to touch the case again? and should you hold onto the case while installing/touching components or do you just touch it every few minutes?
 
I talked about this in a previous thread. If you really want to make sure you're grounded permanently throughout the build, just wrap some wire on an external organ (arms or legs preferably :P) and attach the other end to a non-painted area of your case.
