just curious on what ya'll think
what kind of hdd is better, as far as speed and reliability
regular old ide, sata, or raid
(i know absolutely nothing about raid, but i hear it mentioned all the time)

Erm.... just for the record, RAID isnt a type of hard drive, its an arrangement of several hard drives to provide a more efficient working condition. And it can be implemented on either IDE or SATA.

I would have to go for SATA, its just better, speed reliability everything!!!! IDE is gettin old now.

ok...now i remember someone telling me something about the raid thing before
i don't deal with it at all at work, so i don't know much bout it
from what i hard, isn't it something to the effect like you can take (for example) 2 200gb drives and joine them together to where it's like they're one drive?
but that way, doesn't it make it to where even though there is 2 200gb drives, it seems like there is only 1 200gb?
is that what raid is?

i dont think ide is going to die anytime soon. alot of ppl still have old mobo so where they gonna get their drives and they'll need add on cards if it happens.

^alot of people still have agp mobos, but look at new mobos... very few have agp, everyone is buying pci-e. same thing with sata in the next 3 years or so

HDD 101
raid 101.

sata or sataii is the best... ide will be phased out in the coming years anyways.
where'd you read this?

Look around at the electronics store..
I have been looking at the way the computer industry operates. Due to the needs of computing, the lowest common denominator in the pc (slowest piece) gets upgraded, researched first. Take the last 4 years we have seen HUGE advances in almost every aspect of computing except Hard drives. Processor went from 800mhz to the current 4.0ghz processors. The huge advance in computer ram.. I remember running with 128mb and wondering how much faster the computer could run... Now we use 1.5 gb to 2.0 gb of system ram in the average PC. PSU now being required in upwards of 850W...

Now lets look at the hard drive.. We have seen size increases, prices drop rpm are basically staying the same... The hard drive is now the slowest aspect of the pc.

I recently read an article which showed how the computer developers wer using large amounts of converted ram as a storage device to allow pc's to boot in under 3 seconds... Again the hd is holding back computing...

My prediction: The hardrive will move to SATA for a small overall speed increase. But in the near future we will be moving over to the electronic storage devices.... The current "thumb drive" sizes will increase and prices will drop. This changeover will drastically increase the speed and performance of computing...

Anyway.. thats my opinion. Agree?

my prediction is that ALL drives will become sata interface. there is already a couple dvd-r drives that are sata... its so much faster, much more space saving and efficient, and much more reliable. i see no reason for ide to stick around much longer

SATA CD/DVD Drives arent any faster then IDE drives. But for hard drives Sata is much faster, although there seem to be more problems with them, and a bit more expensive.

If your only going to be browsing the web, word processing, things of that nature, then you can just go with IDE.

i cant see manufacturers phasiong IDE out completely. That would be silly, i have yet to see a vast amount of SATA CD DRIVES and the such. And as already stated, the speed difference between IDE and SATA for an optical drive is really nothing.

I prefer IDE in that it is always compatible with everything. SATA is still a bit "slap dash", its not really complete. You can bet near on 100% of PC's are using IDE but only something around 50% are using SATA. For a fu;; phase out of IDE the SATA useage figure would have to be far higher.
