Preinstalled programs on a new computer

I just bought a HP m7170n MultiMedia system brand new. When I started everything up, it had about a million shortcuts on the desktop, and a bunch of preinstalled programs. I was just wondering, do I really need these programs? if not, how would I remove them. I use the computer for amature video editing, gaming, internet. But sense its a multi media system, I started using it for radio, tivo, dvd's, etc... I really dont want the computer to be cluttered with programs I would never really use, so I was just wondering, how would I go about removing them, and how do I know which ones not to remove?

sorry, I'm a newb......this is my first actual computer that I owned myself.

Trash 'em! Hehe, go to control pannel and remove what you can. For the most part, you don't need any of them. You might want to do a quick search on google for a few of them, just to make sure you aren't removing any drivers or anything... But yeah, store bought computers tend to be loaded down with lots of free software. "$20000 worth of preloaded software to slow you're system down!"

Most of the stuff that HP loads on to its computers is a bunch of crap. Delete most of it and it will actually help it. Oh, and by the way make sure you get rid of the WildTangent stuff, that's all spyware, and comes to you direct from HP!

Should I keep the Norton anti-virus program, and the spy trap anti-spyware program?

Also, should I get rid of the HP photo editing, video editing programs, and just buy another video editing program? I'm asking because it seems like its part of the windows multimedia thingy(the one operated by the remote, to watch TV, movies, etc...)

I already got rid of the "HOT DEALS", "AOL", "INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS", "WILD TANGENT".

Ah...I was about to mention something about a trial version of norton. I'd say trash it and just get AVG.

Most of that stuff you can trash. I see no drivers or anything, it's just a matter of what you actually WANT... Check your restore disks. YOu might be fine to remove most everything then just reload what you want if you so desire...

do I really need these programs?
Although yer the only one that can really answer that ... probably not.

if not, how would I remove them
Usually Control panel --> Add/Remove Programs

and how do I know which ones not to remove?
Personaly preference for some of them ... experience for the others

Also, should I get rid of the HP photo editing, video editing programs, and just buy another video editing program?
Well have a look at it first ... if YOU like it then YOU get rid of it ... what WE say is kinda ireelevent if YOU like it :)

Throw 'em all away. The most important ones are: My Computer, My Network Places, Recycle Bin, IE, OE, My Documents, Windows Midea pLayer, and probably some others.

off WildTangent, uninstall that, eww that spyware gives me the willies. And all the wildtangent games too. My fave part of getting a computer is uninstalling about all the programs that come with it. And installing ones you need

I have never bought a DELL or HP comp before, i only ever custom build, ive never experienced all this crap on a PC before

Hehe to each their own ... my favorite part is using the machine.
