Presario 700 Laptop issues.

I have recently acquired one of these, with the comment of "it doesn't work"

well, it DOES work, BUT it took about 12 hours to install windows XP, and I haven't actually bothered waiting for it to start up into windows, as it seems it will take somewhere around an hour...

basically, this assumed 900Mhz laptop, with 256meg ram, and 20gig harddrive, seems to be running about as well as a 90Mhz machine, with 64 megs of ram...

ANYONE, got ANY ideas!!!

I believe its a Duron 900, a few site said it was, so, yeah, I guess it is..

thanks!!!

edit: when it plays the windows sound on startup, it plays it REALLY poorly... extremely jerkily, like attempting to play an MP3 on a 486... :p

Im trying to offer suggestions. You above post doesnt really let me know you level of computer knowledge. I am going to guess you don't want to try safe mode. Have you tried a HD scan in Dos, make sure the HD is healthy? Also try the laptop with the battery removed, plugged into the wall.

I dont think safe mode is going to help...

havent scanned the drive, but there were no issues when I tried the drive in another computer...

tried the laptop with everything removed, even the internal keyboard... :D

I've just cleaned the motherboard abit, where it appears to have gotten wet at some stage. it didn't help.

Ahh, so there is water damage... And you reformmated or atleast checked it with the new install.. Im going to try to find some DOS programs for diagnostics...As you can't or don't want to load windows..

They have a range there, 30 was one of em...

I have found some tools, but they are all windows based.

I would try a memtest to test the memory, but because of the water damage the motherboard sounds like the issue.

Does the Laptop make any weird noises? Have any corrosion or noticable damage from the water?

EDIT: Actually this is all the info I can give.. I am at work right now, and I am off in 40 min. Meaning I have to get all packed up and ready. I am going on a 4 day fiching trip in northern California! Woot! Got the Lund all setup, and ready to leave!

Hope you figure this out!

there was just some crap on the board around the USB connectors, and thats it...

I'm going to try swapping the CPU with a Duron 850 I have lying around :P

F*CK ME DEAD!!!

I installed Linix Lycoris, and it seems to run FLAWLESSLY!!! and it installed in about half an hour....

windows SUCKS BALLS!!!

heh, this laptop is nice... now I'm pissed I spent $1200 on a Celeron 1.5Ghz laptop like 6 months ago :( oh well.

I might try Windoze on the Presario again sometme, and see how she goes.

thanks for the help...

windows XP installed, and running fine...

I'm thinking that cleaning the motherboard, and reseating the CPU, then reinstalling windows is what fixed it...

hmm...
